it is being reported today that there is fears video games could cause an epileptic fit in young children.

why is this being reported as something new and shocking? theres been warnings about photosensitive seizures in video games for maybe 5-10 years. what about tv programs that can cause it, why isnt that beinv reported? they say its due to the flashing images in the games, but what about flashing lights in 100s of other everyday situations?

i really am sick of the news, and quite afraid that people maybe watching it and not questioning whats reported.

anyone noticed that "stabbing" isnt the new buzz word anymore? a few months ago every other story was about someone being stabbed, whats changed now? now all of a sudden you never hear anything about it.

the media create stories that they think will stir up some sort of fuss in the public.. once everyone knows about something they have to move on to something "new" or at least something that people havent thought about for 3 weeks...

Not saying there is no truth in what they report (although it is dubious at best at times) but they don't exactly report on real issues alot of the time

then i cant understand the point in them at all.
their job should surely be to report on the facts of a matter and nothing else.

because everyone knows Video games are evil spawns of the devil and it needs to be pounded into the head of the population that they're going to kill all their children* and that if they don't keep repeating it, people might actually realise that the chance of epilepsy from playing games is no different than watching a tv programme with lots of flashing images in it.

*may or may not be true

pure facts wouldnt be boring if we didnt have all this other sensationalist crap shoved down our throats all the time!..

personally i pay very little heed to anything i read in newspapers or see on tv. far better to actually do what research you can yourself if its something you are interested in

If there were more people like you there would be less hysteria in the financial markets... instead the western world is behaving like a bunch of nervous virgins on a promise..

The media have definitely more than played their part in alot of the hysteria around the credit crunch. Would the banks have collapsed as quickly as they have if the media hadnt encouraged customers to take all their money out "so the fat cats dont line their pockets"?

working in finance for a bank i think that i maybe take alot more of what they say with a pinch of salt than the fools you see quoted on the news etc

you want a handle on your candle tris- ;)

I guess news has to be sold, so you can have it impartially reported by extremely well informed experts who convey the story as only experts could....or you could have Paris Hilton tell you she wants to run for president of the USA because she's a hottie (in her own mind).

Ah, this is your problem. :(

The job of news channels is, first and foremost, to attract viewers...

I hate to say the "C" word again (people'll be groaning) - but in a capitalist economy you can't justify running a news channel without viewers.

So sensationalism is the order of the day. Sex, drugs, stabbings, any old heart-string-tugging wank and you get viewers. After that they may try to shoehorn a few stories in, but not in any real depth - or you turn the retard viewers off...

Goes for newspapers, internet news channels and is pretty much the same for non-news TV programs. Actually, pretty much all media. :(

i would usually put my trust in The Times if i am to read a newspaper and it usually seems to the point. but then again, is that just an illusion?
sinve they publish law reports i assume theyre trustworthy.

I buy the Times (esp. on a Sunday) but tbfh - it's just another Murdoch rag. They've nearly all got angles.

I'd buy the Independant but I'm pretty sure it's not as independant as it was when it was launched. And it's a shit read :)

maybe The Times is a bit more subtle with its angles then.

plus when i read it it makes me look clever.

I read The Telegraph and The Grauniad and hope the truth is somewhere vaguely in the middle.
