Before people go crying about this being OT, I'd like to remind you that I wouldn't mind actually getting some response, rather than posting it in some comatosed section.
Now, my dvd-burner has been a pain in the ass lately, as even tho it's powered up and recognised by my pc (icon showing in My Computer, as well as loading signs when inserting a CD, etc.), it won't read any cd's/dvd's, or burn them. When I insert a disc it loads up and after a couple of seconds tells me that there's no disc in there, even tho I'm fairly sure I'd been holding one a few seconds before :I
I tried reinstalling the drivers, aswell as reinstalling Windows, switching cables and place in the master/slave line, and whatever else I could think of, to no avail. So, does anyone have the slightest idea of what might be causing the problems (apart from the thing just being plain fucking broken, as it's only a couple of months old and I can't really be arsed buying a new one)...?

Cheers, in case anyone actually brings up something useful.

Sounds broken.

The technical forum isn't comatose, though, so a better place for this.

If you got your old CD-rom lying around, install it to see if that works, if not it might be a hardware problem. You could also try putting your dvd in another comp to see if you get the same result in that machine. If so it's prolly broken. And if it's, as you say, only a few months old get a new one through the guarantee.

Well, I tried several cd's and dvd's, which I also tried on a diff computer aswell as a dvd player, which both worked.
I guess I'll let the tech guys have a go :p

Had same problem with mine - deffo broke. To be sure, if you have a recovery cd with your pc stick that in and restart the pc. If it ignores the recovery cd on boot up then its the hardware.

sounds like something internal to the drive is busted, may just be laser alignment, but either way its busted, buy a new one, or if its only a few months old, take it back to wherever ou got it and get a replacement under gaurantee.

Its broke. Impossible to tell what, but probably a hardware issue like laser heads out of alignment.
