Saint George? Some relative to Saint Barf, the patron saint of Technicolor Regurgitation?

Something interesting about why St George's Day = World Book and copyright Day:

"The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. This became a part of the celebrations of the Saint George's Day (also 23 April) in the region, where it has been traditional since the medieval era for men to give roses to their lovers and since 1925 for the woman to give a book in exchange".
World Book and Copyright Day - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Copyright day... doesn't seem to have the same connotations as originally intended. While it might have been seen as something to protect the rights of authors back in the day, now it seems like a cynical oppressive corporate tool.

First I heard that. But seems now you cant call Christmas, Christmas I would not be suprised. Might upset one of many immigrants now breaking the back of the social services in the UK.

this is a day to be covertly racist, being proud of your own country offends the muslims that live here.

Thanks to this fucked up Labour government - WHO WAS VOTED IN BY THE PEOPLE OF THIS ONCE GREAT COUNTRY - our beloved St. George's Day is no longer celebrated as it used to be. We've all now gotta celebrate non-Christian religions instead, or risk being imprisoned for crimes against humanity. St. George's flags are now associated with right wing nationalism, you're not allowed to stick a flag pole in your back garden in case it offends some minor ethnic minority who lives 200 miles away, and everyone's gotta watch what they say in case some council official jerk off get offended.

Bollocks.

Happy St George's Day. You know who you are.

If people don't like living here, they can fuck off somewhere else. Before we started pandering to the whims of every ethnic minority who came here voluntarily, who were accepted by the government with open arms, and then who immediately started moaning and sponging off the state and blowing people up, this used to be a great country.

Walk down any High Street and its a case of win a tenner if you spot someone English.

It pisses me off no end when navy ships can't even fly the national flag incase someone might get offended.

/rant not over

When did anyone ever give a shit about St Georges Day? I never remember it celebrated much at all. Just the way things are, no big issue about it. Can start waving flags around and carrying on like the yanks, but that wouldn't be very English behavoiur either.

He's some turkish twerp foistered on us in the middle ages by normans, who took 300yrs to stop speaking french as their first tongue. If you don't like pandering to immigrants you picked the wrong saint to back!

Happy St. George's day everyone. I've always taken pride in my homeland and those who know me know that if they don't like it they know where they can shove their arguement.

When did anyone ever give a shit about St Georges Day?

All the pubs used to be decked out in St Georges flags and union jacks, there were parties and events, stuff on TV to commemorate it. Now, hardly anything.

I don't give a flying fuck if you celebrate it or don't give a shit about it. Thats not an issue here. For council official pricks to start saying that its racist to fly St George's flags on St George's day is absurd. For our armed forces who are not allowed to raise the national standard is absurd. Political correctness gone mad. No, not political correctness. Fear. Thats what it is.

to be frank i really dont give a hoot about it it doesnt make me come over all patriotic or anything like that, i've never owned a george cross let alone wanted to wave one and i can't see myself doing it any time soon. I just think it really takes the michael that we dont get a bank holiday on our own saints day.

i'd be happy with a non denominational saint of all races, i just wanna free day off!

hay i didnt say it'd make me have a hoffgasm or anything but i'm not going to get all shirty over a free bank holiday.

ive never really cared about st georges day because we never had anything about it at school or any celebrations when i was a kid...

now if anyone tried to muck up christmas or halloween, well let me tell you, then there would be some mighty strong words from me i assure you!

Well I'm 35 and don't remember anyone ever bothering with St George's Day much, they celebrate it MORE now as far as I can see. You never used to see pubs decked out in the flags as much as you do now. If anythign I'd say it's the last few yrs it's more acceptable to flag the George flag and you can without looking like some nazi bonehead.

I dunno where u getting this from people 'banned' from flying the flag, I've never heard of it. My local gets the whole front covered in one, must be nearly 20 yards long, and the height of the building. They'll be pubs all over the country with them outside.

Would be nice to see m8.

As far as your comments on banning the flag, there's been a spate of stories in the press about council officials reacting to people putting flags up and so on. And as for our naval warships not being allowed to fly the George flag in case it offended people, I'm afraid thats a fact. As much as the Daily Mail would love to make that one up, its all too true.

Don't think i've ever heard a muslim complaining about an English person showing any patriotism (except when its some dumb arse ignorant daily mail reader complaining wrongly about how immigrants are ruining the country)

surely it was people just as bad as the nationalists that did it? everyone who flys the flag must be part of the national front! etc
