Good old Dungeons and Dragons, the mother of roleplaying games, is celebrating its 30th birthday.

Congratulations to D&D!

So, how many of you here have rolled their dice in pride? And how many are still playing? Roll for initiative monkey-boys!

I first got into D&D and AD&D way back during my schooldays, circa 1979, buying my first books back then as they came into the UK, and in the early 1980s played regularly with school friends, and later with a gaming circle down in Southampton, through to the late 1980s.

I attended a few of the major events, Games Day and Games Fair, I started moving away from it by the time AD&D 2nd Edition came out, and although I've continued to collect 3rd Edition I have yet to play it outside Neverwinter Nights.

My gaming interest got rather diluted after school, I started playing alternative RPGs, like Traveller, Cthulu and GURPS, and got more into boardgame/RPG hybrids like Talisman and Car Wars.

Eventually I lost contact with most of my old friends, mainly due to "real life" (tm), and just wandered around gaming clubs. Then, the whole market dried up as big game companies emerged, and "popular" games like Magic: The Gathering came in aimed at the teenagers, so the whole "niche" element that made it so fun dissappeared.

I have the full set of books for AD&D Editions 1, 2 and 3 at home :)

It's all too sad, in more than one sense of the word.

I am also a former dice roller :)
Been many years since I dabbled, but still got me DM's Guide (AD&D), says 1979 inside so pretty old now, and a few others - Players Handbook, Monster Manual, Dungeoneer's Survival Guide.

.... actually... that's a MM2 on the shelf but not a Monster Manual, wonder where that went :/

I used to play in the late 80's. Sadly our little group broke up and that was that.

Played it a bit in the 90s... And the memories of listening to broad Glaswegian geeks arguing over who can cast Magic Missile and waving little brown books linger on :)

Indeed. Despite dabbling once as a child I never felt comfortable. My suspicions were confirmed when at Uni I saw the NoDDsoc (not just dungeons and dragons society) practising swinging plastic swords in faded Iron Maiden t-shirts. I was going to the Bar at the time. There was loads of fanny there ! But they were swinging swords and enjoying each others' pungeant odours.

*shake head*

Summo, are you playing CoD v1.3 on a crappy connection, or is my ASE buddy list pointing me at an imposter?

Played for about 5 years about 3 times a week. Mainly D&D but we did the odd bit of GURPS and some MechWarrior.

Still have all my stuff including a rare printing of the MM where the cover was put on upside down ;) and all 4 of the original Encyclopedia Magica. The originals were leather bound "blble type" books and came out 6 months apart from each other.

Haven't played since I came to Luton 8 years ago, but if I move back home I've a feeling it may all start again as my friends want to start playing again.

Started roleplaying when I was about 8 years old when they started publishing the fighting fantasy books - then moved onto AD&D 1st Edition - I indoctrinated me mates and their mates and their brothers etc. etc.

From AD&D we moved onto trying out all sorts of different systems - Call of Cthulhu was a longtime favourite and we gradually spread out to all the other rpg stuff like live roleplay and computer roleplaying games (as PC's came in - by god they were dire - Eye of the beholder anyone?).

24 Years later we still play most weeks despite people disappearing to Uni - moving, having kids etc. To be honest I think we probably gave up worrying too much about the games a long time ago - its just a regular social night now :)

On a related note, has anyone noticed they've started reprinting the old Jackson & Livingstone Fighting Fantasy books?

You can get the first ten in two seperate boxed editions. I think they're about £17.99 each, but I can't remember exactly.

I've got a 1st edition printing of Warlock, but my favorites have to be Appointment with F.E.A.R and Rebel Planet. As they were the only ones I finished without cheating :)
