Handheld Console? Which one?!?

Im thinking of buying one of them handheld thingies for when im bored at work, if im right then the only ones out on the market atm is Nintendo DS or the PSP? is there anymore? and if u've bought one, or had a go..what do you thinks worst investing my hard earned cash in? Is there a new one in the pipeline, should i wait for it etc.

Also what games are good ;p

psp's have a far better catalogue of games, and are much easier to get pirated games/firmware for if that's yr bag.

the ds is a nice concept, and the new super marios bro's games look ace - but the rest of the games catalogue looks pretty shoddy to me.

I play them to get an experience I don't get on the consoles...and it seems to me that all the PSP is going to do is offer up some PS2 quality games in a handheld. I want something significantly different in my gaming, and that's why I'm totally stoked for the Nintendo DS system. Bring on the dual-screen, touchscreen gaming.

Nix: PSP. With the Nintendo DS, I can smell something good in the kitchen, but with the PlayStation Portable, I can taste it. This is the portable system that gamers have been waiting all along for, ever since the PlayStation burst on the scene and pushed the business to where it is now. The console biz is reaching a saturation point, and PSP would be a great overflow for talented works to get their due. DS will be quite cool and quite different, but Nintendo's approach just doesn't seem to have the oomph to push it gamers to it, whereas Sony is sitting at the wheel of a bulldozer. As long as they don't grind their gears out...

Jeremy: PSP. Truth be told, I'm not a big handheld gamer and probably never will be. The most work I've gotten out of my GBA, for example, is on my GameCube thanks to the Player. But when it comes down to it, I'd give the edge to the PSP as the one I'm looking forward to most. While it may get its ass kicked in the beginning, I think Sony will support it a lot longer than Nintendo will support the DS and have a much stronger second generation of software than the DS's second and third combined. Pretty important stuff -- if I ever play 'em longer than my PS3, Revolution, and Xenon.

Hilary: PSP. I pick the PSP simply because I know what I'm gonna get from it. I'm not expecting a gameplay revolution, but I already know it's just gonna be a pocket PS2. The DS is still a mystery to me. Do I want dual screens? Are the games using touch screen something that I'm personally going to enjoy? I don't know. I'm curious, for certain, but not convinced that the DS is going to be the type of handheld I'm going to enjoy. .

David: PSP.Two screens is nifty but I'm more excited about the possibility of listening to some tunes or watching a movie on my gaming device. I'm hopeful that Sony will be able to produce a bite-sized super system that fulfills all of my portable media needs. I'm also hopeful that I will have enough dough to afford it.

So Which One?

Both systems are game machines, but there's no denying you can use them for other applications. The PSP truly has a leg up on the DS in terms of secondary features. The PSP's UMDs allow for on-the-go movie-watching, its built-in browser can use an Internet connection to decent effect, and the Memory Stick expansion slot makes the system a playback device for videos, pictures, and music. The DS, on the other hand, is quite limited in terms of extracurricular activities. Nintendo has a not-yet-released Play Yan peripheral that can add video-playback capabilities to the system, but the DS's low screen resolution is a far cry from the image quality that the PSP provides. If you're looking for a jack-of-all-trades portable device, the PSP is the better bet.

When it comes to style, there's no arguing the PSP's good looks. The DS looks like a Frankensteinian Speak n Spell compared to the glossy curves of the PSP. If appearances were the only concern, the DS would have died an untimely death sometime around March. Nintendo is putting more effort into style, if the Game Boy Micro and Revolution are any indication. Given the fact that Nintendo has redesigned the Game Boy Advance countless times, we're betting that we'll have a better looking DS system soon enough.

To say that one system is clearly better than the other would be flat-out wrong. Both systems come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. If you're after innovative games that you can't find anywhere else, the DS would suit you well, not to mention save you a bundle of cash. The PSP has raw graphical power in the form of a beautiful screen and a powerhouse of a processor, but it comes at twice the cost of a Nintendo DS. The great screen is perfect for watching TV shows or catching a movie while on the go. And if that weren't enough, the PSP can double as an MP3 player, image viewer, and even more. While the PSP does have an equivalent number of solid games, it doesn't have nearly as many of the exclusive must-have titles that the DS has. It all depends on what you're looking for, as both systems offer very compelling arguments for your dollars.

i was watching some guy playing his psp on the train before they came out in the UK (He imported one from Japan) and i have to say it was very impressive =] Never had one myself though. Thought they were pretty pointless.

Gone through Lynx, Gamegear and Gameboy and agree with Himse lot of medioca games on both + tiny screen. If your doing a 2 hours on the train a day it might be worth it, but a good book is cheaper.

I was about to add my own litte bit in defence of the DS. One of the best things about this system is the vast back-catalogue of GBA games that you can also play on the DS, and there are some absolute crackers too. Mario Brothers, Sonic, old Sega games like Phantasy Star 1-3 and Shining Force, Zelda: The Minish Cap, Breath Of Fire, Final Fantasy games. I have one of the older DS systems, but the lighting on it is still great, though it is a little heavy. For actual DS games, at the moment they are probably a little limited.

To include all that on 4gb the quality must have been horrible 250mb/part is the minimum I can stand for, usually just trying to fit 3 parts on 1gb.

Anyway, got both and they are collecting dust :S PSP is pile of wank without "modding" and DS Lite rocks simply because of GBA games, imo

The quality is fine tbh, sure its not perfect but still very good and definately watchable. You don't need to mod the psp for it to be good, you only need to downgrade it to play homebrew which is usually shit and copied games. GBA/SNES/Genesis games can all be played on an emulator on the psp with homebrew if thats your cup of tea.

I prefer the psp tbh, the DS games just seemed to me aimed towards a younger audience, kids in particular, must be showing my age

from what i have read
if you are buying it soley for games, you might be better off with a DS Lite
If you want more for your money get a PSP

Either way you wont be dissapointed as neither has a bad review tbh

Well I got a PSP - and love it. But never tried the DS so guess I am not the right one to ask.

Daxter is really nice for PSP, if you like that type of games.

i have both PSP and DS and i would say PSP is great for long journeys cause you got movies music and games. DS is better for just downright fun. Most of my mates have DS so we all play games together. I can easily play the DS for hours (mario Bros rules)
