oh my god

Been playing for 4 hours non-stop and it's fucking amazing and makes Doom 3 look like a pile of dog cocks (well, in playability terms for definite). I'm glued to it and i've only stopped to go for a shite and phone my dearest.

DX9 makes me moist, the water effects are truly amazing.

Two words though: fucking helicopter.

I steamed it and waited till I got home from work before unlocking and it worked 1st time. Only played it for a couple of hours but its pretty impressive, not to mention enjoyable and it runs/looks great. Now if I can only complete it before Vampire:Bloodlines comes out...

Playing "catch" with Dog the robot in glorious 1600x1200 with 6xAA and 8xAF was just amazing.
I definitely concur with throdgrain, HL2 is at least 3 times the game Doom3 is, and then some.

Not since civilisation have I sat down for a game at about 10pm, thinking I'd play for an hour or so, and eventually quitting when I realised it was 2am.

Damn computer games.....

I liked the part where you

control the ant lions when you raid the prison.. 2 choppers trying to kill you and you have about 20 special forces dudes trying take you out..

However throw the little egg thingi and watch the ant lions chomp into peices..

fun!

Is it really that difficult to use spoiler tags?

Tbh m8 - I've *just* decided to stop reading any HL2 threads because you just know that people won't think like that :(

I was working late last night so only got to play it around 10pm for a couple of hours. It's damn good so far but I think I was too knackered from work to fully appreciate it. I kept just walking up to the guards to antagonise them and get a thwack on the head. Alex doesn't bitch at you for staring at her tits like in one of the early videos they showed of HL2. *sulk*

Regarding the "helicopters", is this the same thing as one which pesters you near the start, as you are beginning to make your way along the "canal", just past the bit with the "see saw" ? If so, I only had a pistol at the time, can you take it out with that alone, or some imaginative method involving flaming barrels etc, or perhaps a hidden Stinger missile launcher somewhere ?

I just got to the second vehicle section (I assume that doesn't need the spoiler tag) and it's pretty annoying. They drag on waaaay too long, and you can't even shoot really when doing it...it's just driving about for a long time, pretty tedious. Other than that, I'm very impressed, love the gravity gun :D

Enjoying it so far.. much better than Doom 3... FarCry is close behind in some ways but it doesn't have the story or the feel of HL2... It retained the nice feeling the original engine had...

imo the graphics are superior to Doom 3... Doom 3 was almost pitch black always... HL2 has a nice 'real world' feel.. just like the original HL did and that's why I prefer it's look.

Still too many scripted actions for my liking.. but very nice all the same..

CS:S is also nice.. can't wait for HL2DM and TF:S

;D

Hehe.

Just up to the bit:

with the airboat.

Liking it a lot so far - but Steam is being a bit irksome and refusing to start the game at times...

:/

Yes, have you tried the Gravity gun? I got this free HL2-CD key from a friend! Very awsome game indeed. Just wait until you try the physics! My god how cool, but remember to play it in the weekend. Or else you get stuck in the computer chair all night! :wij:

I think Id need to take heed from this and the fact that both Doom 3 and Quake 3 Arena were disappointing games, and stick to just farming out engines.

New steam update

ffs stupid 3 char limit

Half-Life 2 Update
November 24, 2004, 5:00 pm · valve

The changes in this release are directed at reducing the problem some users are experiencing with sound stuttering. The sound stuttering is not indicative of a sound problem, sound stuttering is only a symptom of texture thrashing on your video card or AGP memory. For information on how to reduce texture thrashing visit this link on our support site:

http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=280

This update will fix sound stuttering that users were experiencing that would last for longer than a few seconds during normal gameplay. This update will also eliminate this same behavior following a quicksave or autosave. There will still be a short pause while the autosave happens, but not the more drawn out stuttering behavior.

We are still investigating another performance problem on some hardware, which will manifest where the game is getting into a state where performance drops to less than 5 fps and does not recover or crashes.

Next week we will be releasing the Source SDK, along with a surprise for the community.

Q3 wasn't a disappointing game - it was purely MP only, and if it made me play it for 4/5 years straight then it musn't be too bad...

ID's multi-player offerings have been far better than valves to be honest. Unless that suprise is a decent HL2DM ofcourse :)
