I love it, been a Sunderland fan for the last twenty years and have taken stick from the great unwashed for most of that time. Feels good waving good bye to you as you geordie bastards make your way down to the fizzy pop league.

Following defeat at the hand of Aston Villa today, relegated Newcastle United are seriously looking into the possibility of joining the Scottish Premier League.
Newcastle United could join a rejigged Scottish Premier League as early as the 2010-2011 season, owner Mike Ashley announced this evening following his club's relegation from the English Premiership.

The SPL has long been dominated by Celtic and Rangers "the Old Firm" and the prospect of northern English clubs joining them would lead to increased TV revenue and a dramatic rise in international interest.

With Europe an increasing obsession, clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool desire a reduction in the size of the Premiership. But in Scotland's case an INCREASE in the size of the league by adding northern giants such as Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Blackpool would give the league added appeal.

No one should doubt the seriousness of Newcastle's intentions in heading North. Mike Ashley, Newcastle's majority share-holder, said on Sunday that a move was "inevitable", adding that he felt "let down" by both Sky Sports and the Football Association whom he claimed had given him "assurances" that Newcastle would avoid the drop. But defeat against Champions of People's Hearts, Aston Villa, put paid to those "promises".

Brian Quinn, Celtic's chairman, claimed at Celtic Park on Sunday that the top Premiership clubs "relish" the prospect of joining the Old Firm, a view endorsed by a fat man with no shirt on outside Villa Park after Newcastle's lacklustre defeat.

The Premier League insist there are "no plans" to change the structure of the 20-strong division. But with Newcastle no longer under their jurisdiction the Toon Army would be free to move to the Scottish league where Ashley claims they would "get the love and respect" they "deserve".

Jumping borders may concern UEFA, not to mention the Scottish and English FAs, but Newcastle know their lawyers would have a case at Brussels where, in a world altered by Bosman, they could argue restraint of trade and movement. UEFA might struggle to explain why Monaco can play in the French League, Cardiff City and Swansea in the English but Newcastle cannot in the SPL.

"This club deserves to be in the Champions League year-on-year", Ashley concluded, "and a move to Scotland - our natural home some would say - means our amazing fans would get what they deserve".

The SportsDirect mogul went on to add that "the additional revenue generated would benefit the Scottish game immensely. I'm sure that the Scottish fans would be grateful to have us there and we'll show English football what they're missing. We were badly let down this season. Sky Sports and the Football Association promised me that they would ensure our Premier League survival if I appointed Alan Shearer as Manager for a publicity stunt. Now I'm left feeling that I've been made to look a right "publicity stunt" myself."

Its a bit of a shame really, I like Newcastle but its something that needed to happen. They need to realise they are not a big club any more.

Maybe its for the best in the long run?

It's best for Newcastle as a club if they want to rebuild and stop the rot, they will be forced to shed their overpaid "stars". Boro are probably the same, rather than staying up and struggling next year again, a good season in the championship may be what Southgate and Boro need.

if we gonna make this a serious thread.. unlike the other one... lemme tell you something

newcastle going down is not a bad thing for the club.. it will force a clearout of all the underachieving wannabes, raise a crapload of cash, and toon will get back to get hardworking footballers in their team.

and tbh... i'd rather we rebuilt NOW.. than stuggle season after season with players who dont show any passion for the club and with a chairman who.. whilst he's paid off the debts... made some bad decisions.

the changes at newcastle this season woulda put any team in trouble.. but the players on the whole... where a fucking joke tbh. need to clear out the crap.. rebuild, with players who are hungry for premier league football..

we done it before, and we can do it again... may take 2-3 years... not expecting a bounce back straight up.. coz that would mean problems with finances.. toon just needs some stability.

steady that ship.. then move on.. push...

we aint leeds.. coz we didnt spend stupid amounts of cash going for champions league before going down... this has been coming.

this may be just the purge newcastle need. one thing you'll never get rid of tho.. is the fans support of the club, and thats worth more than any parachute payment.

we'll be back.. and boy.. will you toon haters shit yourselves when it happens, coz we will take "your places"

Finances stook a bit of a knock with relegation like, we will be losing a minimum of £50m a year just from not being in the premier league :(

You still get parachute payments for 2 years of about £30m. But Ilaya is wrong if he thinks you will get shit loads of cash for players. They wont. They will get a lot less than if they were in the premiership because teams know Newcastle are in the shit and will have to have a "fire sale" just to get the wage bill down because I tell you now, I will be very surprised if the players have a relagtion wage reduction clause.

Apparently Newcastle have already confirmed none of their players have such clauses in their contracts.

Fingers crossed for Hull and Stoke going down. And i would pay to see the Chairman call Phil Brown out on the Pitch at half time and sack him there :)

Isn't Owen on £120k a week, and out of contract in a month? Thought viduka was also out of contract, although he wants to stay. Duff has said he wants to stay, but if an offer is made I can see Newcastle taking it.

Viduka and Owen could have made a fair bit in transfer fees, not their real worth, as Newcastle are in a situation were they cannot really afford to turn down offers. That leaves them with Martins, Duff, Gutierez, Collocini, Taylor. Losing any of them (even given Collocini's poor season) will hurt the team a fair bit.

Sorry but the products of Newcastles youth policy are shocking. Edgar is gash, ameobi is gash, Caroll will not get you 20 goals next year, Steven Taylor is over rated.

Newcastle need to get moving now and sign up the likes of Kevin Doyle, Stephen Hunt, A proper Goal keeper (someone who commands his area), go and take a punt on Beckford he will get you the goals to get out of that division if you can get the defensive side of it right.

Newcastle above all the other clubs in the championship can seel a dream to plaeyrs, the dream of playing in one of the countries best stadiums, to a full house every week. Selling them the dream of playing in the premiership with a club like Newcastle will be something only so me of them could wish for, they now have an opportunity to do it. If Shearer takes over I expect wholesale changes within the club. I do not expect the has beens to be around for long.

Doyle is premiership bound in my opinion, wouldn't mind us taking a punt on him as we need another striker. Beckford was horrible in the CCC, L1 is his level, same as Fryatt at Leicester.

The only good prospects Newcastle seem to have are Tim Krul and LuaLua, both look like they have the makings of being good prem players, the rest however as already said are dogshite.

I'm sorry, your deluded if you think St James Park will be anything other then half full next year.

I can't wait, had 15 years of abuse from Geordies and so called geordies, I worked in Newcastle for about 6 years and took a fair bit of flak from them for being a mackem, it's just nice to be able to give some back.

Oh and here's a little ditty about that cheating plastic geordie Mr Steven (goes down like he's been taken out by a sniper) Taylor

YouTube - Goodbye Steven Taylor
