erm, was "tidying up" my windows 2000, coz I had like 50 network cards installed from adding/removing them without installing and uninstalling them properly.

Anyway, i spotted this "unknown device" and uninstalled that too, and now everythings totally screwed :/

It boots up normally, but in 640x480, shite colours etc, it automatically logs me in as usual, and the desktop loads and everything, but then it goes crazy

it basically trys to install everything from the device manager again, and then the ntos kernall screws up and I get a blue screen.

I've tried safe mode but its exactly the same

Any other way to fix it then a new install??

I can't think of anything tbh but I fix everything by a Windows reinstall. Don't fear them. They'e good for your PC's health. I average a reinstall every 1 or 2 months

sorry Stamps matey, but if big W is behaving in the extreme fashion you describe a format and a reinstall is the only thing I'm afraid

I really dont wanna have to format, coz I've had that install of windows since like, my 2nd install of win2k, which is over a year at least i think.

It has all my installs et all and everything, nooooooooo i can't bear to be parted with it

If only there was a way to boot into win2k an add new hardware blah blah without anything else fucking it up.

if your os dies just because you install some hardware, then take it out again...it's crap. simple.

Try not to be so stupid TDC...its clear he didn't do it properly and as he also states he removed an unknown device. So the OS is crap because it doesn't account for the fact that people don't do things as they should....yeah sure.

The allowed presence of 'unknown's' in a system is so absurd it borders in the insene imo.
I'm aware what he did. I'm frankly amazed w2k let him get that far heh. Remember it wouldn't let me change an IRQ

W2K works fine as many here can tell you. It most probably wasn't an unknown until he fooked around with his comp. I've never needed to change an IRQ since its not a problem when it comes to sharing

I know w2k works fine Emb, I had a system at home and I have one at work. I just chose not to use it (at home).
As to that 'unknown' thingy, I agree it was prolly something rather important that he deleted/mangled heh However, if you'll follow a bit of TdC logic, w2k should never have let it come that far. After all, if the administrator can't change an IRQ why is he allowed to break a vital system device?
Btw, as you and I can prolly both admit to without insulting our combined intelligence, one doesn't have to break a vital device to take down a win system heh.
Back to the IRQ thing: bollox to IRQ sharing, I don't give a toss about it heh. I *want* a given card to use a given IRQ. The IRQ in question is *free*. I am the administrator. The system will *not* let me do it. sucks.

im a newbie to linux, and im using gnome because i suck with a shell, *but* even i managed to compile a new kernal, configure all the options right(on the 3rd attempt), and get it to boot, whilst not getting rid of my existing kernal
i overlooked the the absence of ext3 in the kernal configuration, and was getting error messages because 2.2.x no support ext3, but good ole linux still manages to mount it in a perfectly useable form, so editing my fstab and having it mount as ext2 was possable from gnome, which = win.

now if only i can get my modem working n linux

You can manually assign IRQs in Win2000 and XP if you disable ACPI in yer BIOS (if your BIOS will let you) and install Windows in standard-HAL mode.

The point is though, why would you want to? PCI devices are designed for sharing IRQs.

Wow, someone can recompile and install a new kernal. It's hardly a fantastic challenge.

decided to give it 1 last go before i formatted and reinstalled tonight, so i stripped out every piece of hardware excluding the vital parts and thankfully win2k worked

/me will leave all devices alone in the future
