Gypsy occupation

My local train station car park has rather unexpectedly become a gypsy (or traveller in general, although they did have a horse) camp.

Now I've never had problems with gypsies in the past and have even been to some gypsy dos (friend of friends) but this is a trifle annoying. What can be done ?

But seriously, I'm not sure the council can do anything about it, that's probably why they're there. Maybe try the rail company (in my case it would be Scotrail) and then the council if that doesn't get anywhere? Are there any parking restrictions up?

I can't stand gypos.

if its the train company's land then best bet is to talk to them about it. Otherwise as Big G says talk to the council.

Same thing nearly happened in my home town, that was until the squaddies got into a massive fight with them and they moved on.

Oh, and make sure all things are removed from your garden. Yes its a stereotype, but its generally true. And the camp will almost certainly be left in a complete shithole when they go.

If we're talking about similar group of folk then in finland(which we probably are), i don't get the utter hatred people have.

If someone could enlighten me, it would be great, but otherwise it just looks like intolerance towards a group of people that sometimes did something to your dog.

This kind of intolerance is here too, and while there might be problem cases, it doesn't stand to say that all are a problem.

Yeah but that is only "worse" if your reality is the start off point as the attitude in this thread. When i look at Snatch, i don't see them as worse.

Where does it come from? Why the direct hate?

(We are talking about the same/similar enough people by the way, i've lived next door to some, nice folk as long as you don't deal. Mind your own and you don't get trouble.)

Only thing they seem to be a "problem", is shifty dealing, arrogance and mobility(according to stereotype shown)....which two or three traits can be found on several forum members

Can't really say "But they are violent people!" when you're talking about firebombing their homes.

They steal everything that isn't nailed down, they use the area they camp in as a rubbish tip, leaving all sorts of junk behind, including human waste. They are rude and disruptive and just abuse the place they are staying in, causing hundreds if not thousands of pounds worth of damage, usually at the expense of local councils who should be spending the money elsewhere. A lot of the time its a civil cost. We had them in the village once and it was down to the parish council to fund a metal gate and bollards so that they couldn't come back. The police weren't really that interested.

This isn't gypsies by the way, gypsies are generally nice people who get a bad name through pikeys.

I'm asking because, i tend to think that in many cases these are "hit and be hit" situations, where both sides could get along, but because group A thinks group B is a bunch of thieves, group B acts that way just because...well..they already think that!

If the whole community treated you as a criminal, no good, waste of space...would you act like a model citizen?

I'm just thinking that some mutual work would solve a lot, starting with people treating them as people and not start firebombing straight away.

You try being in a pub with a load of pikeys, i used to work in one that pikeys would come into, and nearly everytime we closed the bar it was due to pikeys starting fights

They think because they are anonymous they are above the law, basically real life trolls.

Easy to say that on that side of fence, but what do you think is being said on the other side?

This has probably started from gypsy hating times and then, gradually moved along generation to generation.

Now it's so far that you just simply hate them and they simply act this way because of that hate.

Like i said, we have a similar attitude here towards romani people and while some people may have had bad experiences(like with any humans, scum is everywhere), most of the attitudes come from parents/community just saying "They bad!". I've talked, lived near etc romani and like i said, acting like a hateful a-hole will get you trouble, being respectful and not starting anything will not.

i've lived near gypsie camps alot of my life both in scotland and down here, every single one i've met have been nasty little shits. I got in a fight with one when i was a soldier, done him fair and square. He ran off came back an hour later with a car full to try and jump me. Luckily i was with half a company of squaddies which they didnt know about.

Vile scum the lot of them, and i certainly wont have my mind changed on this matter at all

They can have somewhere to stay when they pay some tax, like everyone else who lives around here. They drive around in transit van pickups, offering to "tarmac your drive mate, for £200?" Cash, of course. The police aren't interested, too much trouble. The idiot who pays £200 of course has to pay more money getting the job done properly, six months later.

The last time they were here it was in a football field up the road. God knows how they got past the nearly-always locked gate, but when they left the place was a fucking disaster zone.

If I were a farmer and had them on my land, I'd get the tractor, go buy a nice big lump of concrete (say 20 tonnes), and dump it across the entrance. Then I wouldn't remove it until they cleaned up after themselves.

This is what i was talking about earlier; the "travellers" we get in the UK and Ireland aren't gypsys and are nothing to do with Roma. They're Irish. I can't comment on Romanies, I've never met one, but Pikeys (UK) or Knackers (Ireland) are not the kind of people you want to have any dealings with if you can avoid. Sorry Toht, but their reputation is entirely deserved.

They do steal anything not nailed down (case in point, we have two knacker camps not far from where I currently rent in Dublin, my estate's management has had to take on extra night time security because of the attempts at burglary, all coming from these camps), they're fantastically violent (at Christmas I was on the Ferry back to the UK; two rival knacker families came into the lounge area and started fighting immediately - this was 2 in the afternoon - apparently there was some kind of knacker Romeo & Juliet thing going on. It wasn't a bit of a pub ruck it was full on, and God help any passengers in the way; UK cops were waiting at Holyhead), and finally, they're filthy. Both camps near us are permanent; with full plumbing, private gates, the lot, and they're disgusting.

I'm sure you may find nice individuals from this group (not that I know anyone who has), but as a group, avoid at all costs.
