hellooooooooo i've been going to the gym 3-4 times a week for the last month, really enjoying it and seeing the benefits already, the only thing that's been annoying me is what to eat. obviously understand the need for protein in the meal im eating after the gym etc but its not always easy as im a poor fucker and sometimes only got crappy food.. so was wondering if anyone knows of/takes/eats/drinks any kind of protein shake/supplement and if it's worth it?

cheers boooooyos

Start eating tinned fish, yeah ok it's not a fresh source of protein, but still if you stir fry it, you can eat nice Chinese meals for cheap and it just happens to be the right diet for what you are doing. Unless that is you are weight training and then you need the carbo's such as rice and pasta to help with the weight gain and the energy you need to keep training intensively. :)

Any high proteinous /carb foods like pasta, fish, rice, eggs. Healthy shit like that. As well as being good for you, they aren't that expensive.
Those shakes are a good supplement for a workout, but I normally gag when I have to drink that during a workout. Just chug it down before imo.

When I first started going to the gym, I wanted to bulk up big time, so for me it was all about the calories. Cashew nuts are a lovely source of those. Yum.

I'm doing 4-5 gym visits a week. I could afford good quality supplements and they make a difference combined with good food and good workouts. I would not recommend getting any cheap supplements, you are throwing your money away, and they tend to taste foul and upset your stomach.

If you want to put on weight then you need to eat at least 4 times a day, make sure you get a good mix of carbs and proteins, I eat fish, 2 eggs, or half a tub of cottage cheese with toast and tea in the morning, A big lunch, usually a big salad with cheese and meat, a snack around 5 before the gym - crackers and cheese, or pasta. And a big dinner after the gym. If you do not want to put on weight then just stick to a normal balanced diet.

Tinned fish in high quantities, esp. tuna, is bad for you.

Agreed - although almost any food in high quantities is bad for you.

The key is a balanced, varied diet that uses all food groups in appropriate quantities (can you tell my other half is a nutritionist yet?) :(

Tuna is a good source of protein, but that's not the only tinned fish out there that you can buy. It's only bad for you if you a) don't know what you are buying ie is it in brine - not so good, or sunflower oil - which is ok and b) where the fish came from and what levels of mercury were in the water it was caught. That sorta stuff is obviously not fit for human consumption. Although I suppose there are shysters out there that will try it on.

On the whole, tinned fish isn't bad for you. I've been eating it for years, because the price of meat just went through the roof. Nothing wrong with me. :)

Only in certain types and brands afaik? It's easy enough to google which ones it's particuarly prominent in.

That only applies to raw too - cooked the risk is no higher than any other fish.

I did a bit of this body building some years ago. I found it fascinating. I might even return to it. I bulked up in no time. I had to take that stuff you put in milk - protein powder. Hell the stuff was vile. I bet the stuff you can get now is 10x nicer. A good store for such stuff is Maximuscle (no it isn't my affiliation link *sobs*). No doubt there is advice in abundance on their site too about muscle gaining.

We did some experiments at uni in my nutrition module with those protein supplements/shakes and the tablets and that, pretty much came to the conclusion that its all a waste of money. Better off just munching chicken and tuna and such, like mentioned.

You only need that protein stuff if your metabolism is through the roof, else a good diet with proteins should do the trick.

Just eat a lot :p

Impact whey protein (unflavoured) - Unflavoured protein | myprotein.co.uk

Bulk quantities, no flavours or crap in it, taste nice as it is - in milk, fruit juice, porridge, whatever.

I used it instead of Slimfast and all that crap when I was on a 1000 cals a day loosing weight to keep enuff protein in the diet. Buy a great tub of it will last ages. Although as others have said, just eat a tin of tuna or a pint of skimmed milk ffs.

It's not a waste of money if you don't get sucked in by the marketing of big companies like Maximuscle.

At the end of the day a simple whey protein is just that. It's protein that's convenient and cheap for when eating a solid meal may not be appropriate.

Anyway, typical diet for gaining muscle;
