well the first thing you should do is ask him what effects he might want, then do research on price/sound relations and get him the best one in your price class & for the style of music he does.

it might be worth him getting a multi effects processor at first to try out the different effects available, then when hes found one he really likes, look for boutique pedals such as

HomeBrew Electronics, Inc.

the sound quality, construction is very nice, bit more pricey but you get a less 'widely heard' sound :)

having said that ive heard killer £40 boss pedals so its just a matter of trying out stuff.

/edit multi effects are pedals with occasionaly hundreds of effects all in one. the individual sound of the patchs (effects) are generally not as good quality. Multi FX Pedals Fx/Pedals (GAK)

Dig deeper to find out what sounds he is trying to get and what budget you have, if he doesn't know what sound he wants then try a multi FX pedal (but these are generally not as good as stand alone pedals unless your buying top end kit like POD XT Live etc), a few choice stand alone pedals is the way to go IMO.

If he likes distortion (which a fair wedge of rock/metal type players do) then you can't go wrong with a BOSS DS1 for the price, £29.99 most places. :)

Agreed, I'd really need to know what pedal/sound he's after before I could recommend anything specific. This site is a very good collection of user reviews, may be worth spending some time trawling through here.
