ok, a test at whether the anti slaters will practice what they preech.

Anyhow.
Can anyone recommend me some new music? I recently got meself the current Eliot Smith album, and was quietly impressed with the fact that it contained a melody. Am also getting more into Coldplay. I accept, that coldplay are not in any way especially original, or nesseserally inspired. However, their music does have a certain beauty to it, that so many shite bands dont do.

Bodhi, whats the new U2 album like then?

Shovel, the new U2 album is a work of genius. The first 5 tracks are possibly the best songs I've heard since Achtung Baby, and believe it or not the worst track of the first 5 is Beautiful day.

Other than that, this year has been a bit shit for music tbh. We've seen the increase in manufactured crap (Westlife, S Club etc), good bands losing the plot completely (Kid A, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants to a lesser degree), indie becoming infinitely more tedious (Coldplay and JJ72 just dont do it for me at all), and the best band in the world (U2) coming back, showing everyone how its done, then fucking off again. Btw, Paul Oakenfold must die, for absolutely ruining Beautiful Day.

My list of good albums from this year:-
U2 - All that you can't leave behind
Roni Size and Reprazent - In the mode
Offspring - Conspiracy of one
Green Day - Warning
Doves - Lost Souls
The Marshall Mathers LP
and the news that Massive Attack will be back next year.

Did Paul Oakenfold remix Beautiful Day? The Bastard ! I've never really liked him anyway.

Anyway, What about Blink182? Sure they're a bit cheesy, you could say; but I stick them on when I'm in a bad mood, and their tunes always put a smile on my face :) Luv the new GreenDay tune also.

Marilyn Manson - Holy Wood

Blink 182 - The Mark Tom And Travis Show (yer i know its a live album, but its sooo funny :] )

Limp Bizkit - Chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavoured water(ever so slightly dissapointing)

OOOOH Bodhi,

as a veteran U2 fan, I have to disagree with ya somewhat. While I enjoy the album, a work of genius, hmm Im not so sure. It starts well alright (except for lyrics of elevation) but tails off at the end, and wild honey bugs the shit outta me. Still, not bad at all.

I liked radiohead tho, Oasis are really just recycling the same stuff over and over.

Other shit I couldnt get enuff of this year.

Motorhead - 25 years
Napalm Death - Enemy of the Music Business
Monster Magnet - God Says No
Joe Satriani - Engines of Creation

and erm (dont tell anyone)

My recent purchases:

Deltron 3030: (self titled)
Kid Koala: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
A Guy Called Gerald: (self titled)
Ded Prez: (self titled)
Gorillaz: Tomorrow Comes Today (single)

But for guitar bands, go get (if you can find them anywhere) Headless Chickens and Falling Joys. Might be a little hard to find these days as they're fairly old.

For something a little more recent, try Monk & Canatella, Sona Fariq (Phoney Freaks) and Joi (for that bangra beat vibe)

And round off with 28 Days - they seem quite nice.

I am having trouble agreeing with Bodhi here. I think one of the only good songs on the new U2 album is BD. The rest, well....I don't like to say "this album is shit" etc because it's all about taste. I wanted to like the new U2 album, but I really sturggled. I think it's very very average.

Kid A, wow, get a decent Hi-fi and it's incredible, so much mood and wierd shit going on, top stuff. It's a very personal album, and until you really understand what they've tried to do with it, you'll hate it. It's not an album that you get together with all your mates and put on loud and rock out too :). Try getting in at 4am from a club, a bit pissed maybe, put it on quietly, and slowly drift off to sleep.

David Gray, hmm, wanted this to be good, but alas, as an album, I don't think it is. Babylon and Please forgive me are the only good tracks on it imo.

Coldplay, ugh, like some of the tracks, it's very travis and radiohead wannabe though.

Oasis is just utter shit, no change there.

I'm with Exor as far as Kid A is concerned :) As he says it is a very personal album, much in the same way that Blur - 13 is a deep piece of music. David Gray....I like it but it's not as good as it was billed, it hardly made me feel better due to it's sheer existence as one critic said. Lost souls rocks bells too :) The Cedar room makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, love that song.

/me tries to think of other cd's he's bought of this years crop

Eminem is good also, Kim is just fucked up though :| sounds like something dave would write.

Kid A is not an album that requires understanding, it's psuedo arty wank bollocks (Read modern prog rock). Radiohead haven't lost the plot, why bother making a listenable album, when you can make a fucked up bit of techno that the indie kiddies will worship as a work of genius.

Anyway, for guitar bands, look up stuff by Thethe; Dusk, Infected and Naked Self are 3 amazing albums

Techno???

Ahhh, I see, we're talking about a different album. Either that, or you are so fucking stupid (and/or on drugs) that you can't understand your own ears.

Besides, most "indie kids" hate the album, that's what I like about it. The hangers on that started liking Radiohead after they became big don't like it, they need rock. I'm just glad the band tried something different (take note oasis) and was rather successful with it.

LOL, I just thought about that again. YOU FUCKING TWAT. TECHNO????????????

There's only one track on the album that could be mistaken for techno (by a fucking retard) and that's Idioteque.

er Exor,

Im normally not one to start a row so dont take this wrong, but I think that must be one of the shallowest reasons for liking an album u can have. Now I personally like it, (exactly for the reasons you stated in your first post!!!!), but this takes the biscuit. Being into metal (among other things), I have seen countless times where a band who are considered "extreme" by the mainstream become popular, and all of a sudden fans who have listened to them for ages go off them, and are embarrassed to admit they like them. This sickens me more than the so-called "bandwagon Jumpers".

Um, I haven't gone off of them, and I don't like the album BECAUSE it's sent the "indie kids" off of it, I just said it's an added bonus. Think before you post, it helps.

/me wonders if Exor has the slightest clue

/me realises Exor actually has no idea whatr kind of techno he is talking about

/me realises that trying to talk about music with an arrogant fool, who admires a piece of music because others dislike it is pointless

/me goes back to work secure in the knowledge that he has forgotten more about music than Exor will ever know

Er...for the thick retards among us, let me spell it out. I DO NOT LIKE KID A BECAUSE I THINK OTHERS DO NOT, BUT BECAUSE I LIKE LISTENING TO IT. I THINK IT IS A VARIED AND CLEVER ALBUM, NOW FUCK OFF.

Cunningly avoiding everything else I say because you can't reply is a technique which makes me respect you lots!

Try reading what you've posted before performing a U-turn a few posts later, it might just save you from looking like a tit.

I award you 2/10 please try harder.

Exor and I have had this conversation many times in IRC. Personally I think Kid A is the biggest pile of shit ever written. If you think its a challenging album, you're a bit dim really. If anything, its deadly dull drivel. Every song starts off OK, but just plain doesnt go anywhere. It's not the lack of guitars that put me off (No guitars in Roni Size or Marshall Mathers album, I love them both), its the lack of emotion.

The other factor that has put me off Radiohead completely is the fact that Thom Yorke is the biggest hypocrite I have ever seen. "We dont want to publicise this single"...Yes. Of course not. The 5 minute commercials on MTV2, the guest appearances on Saturday Night Live, various radio appearances were what? Trying to remind people that radiohead had gone shit?

BTW about the "indie kids". The only people I know who bought Kid A and DIDNT take it back the next day, were the aforementioned "indie kids".

Yes Kid A is a very personal album. Yes I understand what theyve tried to do (How to Dissapear Completely (Up one's own arse). Yes I've heard it on a decent hi-fi (I didnt spend 3 grand on separates to listen to CD's in my car). This doesnt stop me contemplating mass genocide to relieve the tedium that Kid A produces in me.

/me tries to pick out the albums he has bought this year..

these wont end up in a "listened to" order, and will accidentally include some older stuff too.

I did buy the Coldplay and JJ72 albums, both have a couple of VERY nice tracks. equally they have lots of average tracks. JJ72 has one horrible piece of shite on it with some kind of sythesised drum beat on there... cant stand it.

Got the Oasis album too, not too shabby, Noel said he thought it was the best thing they'd done since Def Maybe. Bollocks. I still maintain that Def Maybe WAS and will remain the best thing they ever did/will do. They some how lost their youth early after that. On the other hand, Morning Glory is a great album for learning the guitar too.

So, my highlights.
Kid A. Exor is dead right, a very deep atmospheric BEAST. HAS to be listened to as an album, rather than just picking out individual tracks. (Though National Anthem will find its way onto my compilation tapes).
GOMEZ!!!! - sorry, bias, my favourite band on the planet. While some of the music is a bit *odd* to the degree of being unlistenable/too embaressing - they have some truely inspired moments. And having found live tracks on the net, am firmly in the belief that they are bloody good. Although I have also discovered that they sound rather a lot like the Doors. dunno if that is good or not.

Super Furry Animals - Mwgn - also bizarre, but if you can get past the welsh it is quality meoldic/humourous stuff.

David Grey - mixed opinion on it. some tracks very nice (quite like "Its not right").

Primal Scream - Xtrmtr - lol @ Kill All Hippies. Never really got into it deeply, but still damn nice when combeined with drink.

Doves - Lost Souls - absolutely superb. Melodic, dreamy. Gives me a bizarre urge to drink copious amounts of hot chocolate.

- Additional highlight - Daphne and Celeste 1) Getting bottles lobbed at them, 2) losing their record deal. (woohoo).

stuff

Well, it wasnt really what i was expecting, Kid A that is. I remember back to the Pablo Honey days etc and the more rocky radiohead. Creep was a great song, used to listen to the album in the car alot and round my mates house. Jesus how they changed though. I think im going to have to agree with bodhi to an extent. They might have tried to be clever and put some deep meaning into this or what ever but it just strikes me as moany, annoying, whiney bollox. But then thats just my taste in music, each to his own.

Good guitar bands now we're talking.. being into metal and well just about anything except dance / trance (music made by operating computers and stealing other peoples creations) I would claim to be able to help ya here.

Like mookie said, white pony by the deftones is fucking wicked. It takes a while to get into their sound but after listening to it a few times it grows on you. Some one mentioned a perfect circles album, again a really well put together creation. (listen to judith) Im not really keen on u2 so i wouldnt recommend them. A band i've really been getting into at the moment is Crowbar (Really heavy slow american metal), the riffs and harmonies are amazing :] Been listening to a bit of ratm now they have split up and also some amazing live pantera tracks from the Black Tooth tour of 1998.

One last thing, Bod, The marshall mathers lp contains guitars, what are you listening to ? :)

Amen to that.

I hate it when people have to start dumb flame wars over matters that are completely about taste, opinion, preference. It's getting all worked up for no point whatsoever because in the end you'll realise that you went on and on about radiohead being "techno-ey" and never moved off square 1.

But having said that, I'd just like to pick up on one comment:

They might have tried to be clever and put some deep meaning into this or what ever but it just strikes me as moany, annoying, whiney bollox.

If you don't like moany, whiney stuff then how can you like Radiohead at all? :)

Good stuff this year for me:

Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms
Offspring - Conspiracy Of One
Disturbed - The Sickening
Monster Magnet - God Says No
Type O Negative - The Least Worst Of
Spooks - Hijacking The Planet
Harvey Danger - The Kings James Version
Artful Dodger - It's All About The Stragglers

(weird that last one, normally I can't stand garage, but the tunes on this album are great, much better than the usual two-step crap they throw on the dancefloor).

The new Green Day album was crap (imho).

Have a great xmas everyone!! :)

Does anyone else think that "The National Anthem" sounds like an orchestra tuning up?
