Right, seen as tho there isnt a GTA Forum (From what i see) im just gonna have to post the Problem here..

I um.. bought... GTA2 yesterday, installed it onto my Computer (Windows 2000 Pro Version) and i keep getting this Error when i click on the gta2.exe:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Application Popup
Event Category: None
Event ID: 26
Date: 7/10/2002
Time: 10:16:57 PM
User: N/A
Computer: GRAY-67R6NGVKY4
Description:
Application popup: GTA2: gta2.exe - Unable To Locate DLL : The dynamic link library glide2x.dll could not be found in the specified path C:\Documents and Settings\Gray\Local Settings\Temp;.;C:\WINNT\System32;C:\WINNT\system;C:\WINNT;C:\Program Files\GTA2;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\System32\Wbem.

======

Does that make any sense to anyone? I downloaded the .dll it asks for (glide2x) and put it the System32 Folder, bt it still crashes with the above error.

Any Clues?

May as well post Spec just incase..

P3 600; 256mb SD; GF2 MX400; SB128...

Hmm, try putting it in all the paths it mentions?

C:\Documents and Settings\Gray\Local Settings\Temp
C:\WINNT\System32
C:\WINNT\system
C:\Program Files\GTA2
C:\WINNT
C:\WINNT\System32\Wbem

...or something.

Have you inadvertently selected Voodoo2 as your graphics card?

GLide2x.dll? ;)

If possible, get it to use DirectX rather than Glide, 3DFX or OpenGL. There's a config exe in the GTA2 folder, IIRC.

I dont see a "Config" file in this Folder... but. there is a File called "GTA2 Manager.exe", when i run it, it just says "No Suitable Grafics Card Found" and closes

Hmm, I remember next to nothing from GTA2, maybe there's a primitive kind of safemode of some parameters you can add to the shortcut or something?

Oops! Well, that's the program I meant, anyway.

A GTA2 FAQ reported thus:
Q: No suitable graphics card is found when trying to run the game.
ANSWER
GTA2 requires a Direct3D or Glide compatible video card in order to run. For some cards, Direct3D support may be disabled in the DirectX Diagnostics, or hardware acceleration was turned down to a setting other than 'Full'.
Go to Start, Run, and type in dxdiag and click okay. Click on Display and make sure that the Direct 3D is enabled.
But I suspect that's bollocks.

There is a patch available from www.gta2.com which apparently addresses Windows 2000 issues. Are you running that? If not, do so! ;)

Went to DXDiag, and i couldnt enable/disable D3d (Not supported), so i turned up HW Acceleration to full, but it still didnt run...

Soo just DLed the Patch.. gonna try now

/edit

Nope.. still get the Error :(.. this is weird

I remember playing the original with no problems on my Geforce 2, so I'd imagine it isn't terminal. :)

Ahh! Genport! :D

I have absolutely no idea what that is. :(

/Edit/ Depending on how good your German is, you could try this Google linkage...

Well, from the words I can make out without trying to remember too much German (basically the brand names, heh), it seems to involve your graphics card and Win2k. :)

In German:

immer wieder Fehlermeldungen wie: Genport I/O initialization failure oder
Could not initialize GL (wglCreate Context failed) make sure you are in 65535

Hat vielleicht von Euch jemand ne Idee wie ich's evtl. zum laufen bringe ohne
W98/ME zu installieren?

Wär nett wenn Ihr mir weiterhelfen könntet.

From PlanetQuake:

Hi Madman,

Hopefully this isn't a page 3-er, but I'm having a technical problem with GLQuake, in that I can't seem to get it to work with my system. Here's the skinny: I installed the Shareware Quake available from id, then installed both WinQuake and GLQuake. WinQuake works fine but doesn't have the GL extensions so it all looks like Legos... When I was first running GLQuake I got an error saying a particular DLL was missing (believe it was glide2x.dll). I tracked down the DLL and another support file that was recommended to run with it. I added those to locations in my OS that it was said they would be looked for. id also had a blurb on a page related to GLQuake which recommended using Display Doctor. So I installed it and it made no difference. So I uninstalled it. Now it's not looking for the dll, but I get a different error:

genport I/O initialization error
grSstSelect: non-existent SST
Could not initialize GL (and some info about color depth).

This is what I've got in my system:

Windows 2000 SP 2
GeForce 3 Ti200 (Visiontek OEM with latest NVidia drivers as of March 23)
1.2 GHz AMD Thunderbird
384 MB RAM
DirectX 8.1

I can't seem to find any information relating to GeForce3 and GLQuake or GLQuake with NVidia drivers... most of the GLQuake info seems to relate to 3dfx products.

Aside from popping my old Voodoo5 back in and reloading Windows98 I can't seem to come up with anything to make it work, and the jaggy pixelmapping is hurting my head. I can't be the only person trying to run GLQuake on a GeForce3 with Win2k, can I?

Thanks,

MoistDonkey

a madman: Well, GLQuake was originally written for a Voodoo. The first one. Since no one had full GL support way back then, GLQuake looks for a GL mini-driver in the Quake directory - namely, that glide2x.dll it was mentioning. IF it doesn't find that, it looks in your windows/system directory for opengl32.dll. However, as you might have known, Glide is specific to 3dfx cards.

a madman: So the first step is getting that out of your Quake directory. Next step would be to install the latest drivers, but you've already done that. Step 3 is playing GLQuake. At least, that's the way it works in Windows 98.

a madman: But as you're running Windows 2000 and I haven't been able to find anyone who both had difficulties with GLQuake in Win2K AND got it running, I'm afraid you're stuck with just a history lesson. Sorry, chief. All I can say is that the program's supposed to run and I would guess that with a fresh install of Q1 and strict avoidance of 3dfx-specific dlls you can get your Quake on. You might try a custom GLQuake engine, too.

Bugger :(
