ok

was playing oblivion, screen went a bit mental, froze and refused to do anything. Rebooted the pc, its exactly the same *all* the time, it takes ages trying to load windows, blue screens half way into it and reboots by itself.

To give you some idea of what it looks like, if i enter bios, its a blue and white hazy mess and not a single word can be read.

Reseated the card, cleared the cmos, same problems.

Likely causes? fixes?

I'm assuming its either a) the mb or b) the gfx card.

Not sure which tho.

Should add.... replacing the card isnt an easy job, its a gf6600 PCIE and no other pc in the house has a pcie card to try. Also the mb has no other gfx card slot so I cant try out an agp card or something :E

Go to a local shop, pick up a pci graphics card (not pci-e, pci) and try that.

Should only cost £15.

Failing that, it's likely to be the graphics card.

I've had similar problems before (with the fuzzy screen on boot up). The way I got round it was to switch off the PC manually when it happens, leave it for 10 seconds then switch it on. I know it sounds pathetic but it fixes my graphics problem every time.

Can you boot into safe mode at all? Sounds like a drivers problem rather than hardware :D

jeremiah if its happening in the bios as bigchief mentioned it wouldnt be the drivers causing that as at that point the pc has not loaded any drivers for the graphics, if possible i would be trying what nuffets mentioned.

well i tried it

originally got my hands on a 2nd hand pci-e card, the motherboard refused to get past initial start up sequence (basically stopped after checking voltages and cpu fan :p). Not sure that card worked tho.

So went and swapped it for a pci card, now sat in windows on that machine. Everything else appears to be working.

I have to assume its the card, not the pci-e slot then? Dont't really want to blow £100 on a new card (I refuse to down grade and its a 6600gt :p) to find out it was the slot.

Also, a mate said to me that xfx have a double lifetime waranty with their cards, only info I can find on this on the website is for US/Asia. Anyone know anything about this for someone in the UK?

calls to this number are barred from your phone

guess i'll just have to bite the bullet and order a new card.

So going along those lines, is it worth the extra £45 for a gf7600 over a gf6600GT ?

i thought id update this :)

A mate who had a xfx card said there was a support system inside the xfxforce.com website that dealt with uk stuff. So registered, made a support ticket and within 24hrs had a reply. They made me try and go through the seller first, then issued a RMA and got me to send them the card. They've had it for a little over a week, got a reply now saying they've posted a replacement and should be with me on tues o/

Not the fastest but certainly been very good. Was no questions asked, just a case of send us the card, we'll look at it and fix/replace. I've had the card 18months too so its really good imo. Think I might have to go XFX again in future as the card has rocked too :)
