Ok.. someone help me out please. I already asked native english speakers and nobody was able to give me a final answer...

Which one of the following sentences is grammatically correct?

"I`m going to post IN the forum"

"I´m going to post ON the forum"

In? or On? Or whatever preposition?

HALP :)
(And yes, English is a weird language sometimes :))

I use ON.

You post *ON* the forum.
You post *IN* a thread.

Right, thanks everybody!
I used "on" as well but some people in another forum used "in", so I asked one of them (he´s from the US) and this guy told me that both prepositions are possible and there is no correct form (which I couldn´t quite believe). :)

Well that is your answer, Americans don't speak English, and they do not understand it.

Heh, English is the hardest language to learn fully. Full of nauances and different meaning. A lot of the time meaning has more to do with inflection than with the words used.

To be fair, you could use "in" and most people would not give a shit. However I naturally say ON as do most people. The pope touches little boys bums though

I'd say Finnish beats English hands down on that :p

You can even say that you're annoyed for feeling angry with a repetition of a curse word, which also means a females poon :D

Going on forums to post in some threads i'd say.

Just to screw things up a little more, i've seen several people, UK natives included, say that they will post TO the forum. It always throws me off guard. :p

Welsh has got to be close - as a language that doesn't evolve there are many things there's not even a word for. No actual swear words for example. And there's 4 words for yes & no (they still literally mean 'yes' or 'no', so it's not like having many words for rain, let's say) it just depends on the closed question being asked of you. Now that is really fucked up. :twak:

i think the correct term would probably be at, rather than on.

Wrote something on the wall.
Wrote something at my home.

Something like that?

it depends how you take the word forum.

Forum obviously derives from the latin term for a meeting, so you'd say something 'at the forum'

that's what i'm going on

Then you have to be there, which ofcourse technically you can't be.

but by logging in to a website, you are there in a sense.

you have done something to be at that particular place, and made your presence known by assuming a handle.

THUSLY, you are at the forum.

Well by your logic we are writing on the forums walls.

a forum is a gathering, not a place! you can't write on walls that don't exsist!

Well if its not a place you can't be at it can you?

wiki said:
A forum (Latin, "marketplace"; pl. fora) was the public space in the middle of a Roman city.

Anyways for it to be a gathering you have to be somewhere in order for it to be a gathering. In this case a virtual forum :p. Where you have to communicate by typing (writing).

tbh, correct me if I'm wrong, but most English speakers who say this sort of thing don't speak any other language....don't start believing ur own hype :)

Most english speakers won't know what a prepositon is, they don't have to learn anything but their mother tongue so don't have to give grammer much thought.

You are basing that on an old meaning of the word forum Aoami, you go on websites you are not at a website. You Log on to a website, you do not login at a website.

Actually I find it quite interesting...

Why is called a login though, and why do they say "thank you for logging in"?

You do log in to a website.

I always thought the original latin word "forum" meant an open public place, as in Forum Romanum, etc. I.e. a physical place.

That in itself does of course not contest your claim that the word "at" should be used, but I just had to correct you nonetheless. ;)
