Greatest Britons

He's a great footballer though, and that is the point. What's so great about shakespear? All he's done is right great plays, but so what, that's not important!?

If that's the attitude you want, then what is great? Clearly Shakespear is great, whether you found his plays really boring, or not. As for Beckham, well i think it's proberbly not right to classify someone when they're still in their prime. I don't think it would be going too far to say that the likes of Moore are great, though.

I think Lennon deserved to finish highly, for his musical abilities alone. Music is as much an art as sculptury(sp?), painting, poetry or whatever anyway...

Football is our national game, it makes up a huge part of the culture over here as well as in country's all over the world. Beckham is the biggest English (British too probably) player around, fair enough, some older players should have been included on these grounds but the fact of the matter is this:

This was voted for by the public, the public are generally uneducated and won't give two shits what someone likes Shakespeare achieved, they only respond to media hype. Beckham is a perfect example of somebody blown completely out of proportion by the media. He is a great footballer, should we be told every aspect of his private life? No. But we are, thus the public voted for him.

Agreed. He's a decent bloke, often misrepresented by the media tbh. I still think he should fuck off and concentrate solely on football though. Look at Paul Scholes, one of the best English players around and he never talks to the media. Good lad!

Damn right. Saying that famous wealthy people should be praised for raising awareness and donating to charitys... It's completly stupid, since alot of celebrities do this. The only person of this kind, who springs to mind, is Gelldoff(can't spell his name)...

Beckham is a great footballer, there's no denying this. Whether he's great enough at it to be considered one of the greatest britain of all time, i don't know. I would say there have been English footballers greater than him in the past, for a start, but Mank's point is 100% true. Being English, being British, being European, football is a very important thing, and to say that it isn't is pathetic. Being able paint well, is no different to being able to kick a ball well. There's hardly anyone who can do what Beckham can on the pitch, so he therefore is great.

So Boy George (46) and Aleister Crowley (73) okay then ?

Crowley was fantastic for so many reasons. Just the fact that the self proclaimed 'most evil man in the world' spent the last years of his life living down on the coast having fun with his kid makes me love him.

The fact that it's all so fucking subjective makes the whole question of who is the greatest briton rather pointless.

Diana shouldn't have made the list, simply because its too recent to see any sort of real historical impact. When you're canvassing for the best british citizen of all time, you can only weigh them on the basis of their lasting achievements.

Darwin should've won, really. Or newton.

I'm quite worried by the fact that national pride has got so great Backham is being referred to as a "superb footballer". In a European All-Star game he wouldn't even get a seat on the bench.

He might, not many other English players would.

Anyway, fuck 'European All-Star' games. Think International All-Stars.
