My screen keeps freezing and showing all kinds of artifacts whenever I run a game, view a video, etc, etc.

Card: GeForCe 8800 GTS 512
OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Driver: 266.35 / 260.99 / 258.96

Any ideas? :(

Seems I'm not the only one Big problem with 8800 GT - NVIDIA Forums

I had a similar problem a while ago, it was down to either

  • a) broken card
  • b) overheating

I vacuumed the ton of shit from inside the PC and so far everything has been good.

I'd agree with the above and check it's not coated in dust. Give the case and any fans a good hoovering (carefully of course!).

Then get hold of GPU-Z and see what temps it's hitting. Do a bit of googling and see if that's unusual for your card. You could also try re-seating it.

Or even google for a PSU calc and see if your PSU is strained wth everything you have attached to it.

It's done pretty well over the years, would the PSU become strained after time? As nothing has changed in there for a long time, only getting new keyboards/mouse/headsets.

Was looking in to trying to get an RMA on it but turns out BFG has gone bust, liquidated and sold on to another company that just sells modems and seems US only. Boo. Might try out Overclockers, it says on their site that they only really do 28 days but sometimes help out. Maybe I'll be lucky for once! :D

I tried cleaning out the computer and taking it all out and putting it back in it's not really made any difference, thanks though. Was a bit dusty in there for sure so might of done some good to the other parts!

I was pretty much done with the card but wanted to make double sure it wasn't anything else causing the problem so changed it over to and old one. It ran fine, so in a last ditch effort I decided to try cooking which someone suggested on the nvidia forums to try, it was going in the bin otherwise so what did I have to loose! Took the plastic case/fan off then stuck it in the oven for 10 mins on 180. Seems to have done the trick for now :D It only needs to last another 5 months then I'll be out of the country and not worrying about such things!
