not quite sure what causes it, but it makes my screen look like this:

gfxweird.jpg

i thought at first it was simply the latest firefox update that did it, but it happens in IE too (latest version), only with some website and it is fixed my making the window smaller, however it also affects some games like WoW

ive got a radeon 9800pro 128mb graphics card (yes i know its old ) but never had much problem in the past (nothing that wasnt fixed by updating drivers, which ive tried :/)

i have had RAM problems recently (two of my sticks of RAM acting funny as they too are old and need replacing ), any ideas on what to do next?

Looks like temp problems, either that or the card is failing. I had the same issue on a 9800pro, turns out the fan on the card had failed, the whole card went shortly after.

If other things are failing, check the temps in your computer. Plus, I always seem to ask about this, who makes the PSU, and how old is it? If multiple things are failing a crap or faulty PSU is probably the root cause.

i replaced my faulty PSU about 2 months ago :p and its a 550W one

the fan still seems to be working on the card but it is about 3.5 years old now (and has seen alot of use :) )

Sounds like the faulty PSU may have killed the card, I'd look at getting a new one. I'd recommend either a 7600GS or a x1650 for AGP.

If a faulty PSU has killed your memory and your graphics, look out for other failures soon!

My radeon 9800 pro finally gave up a couple of weeks ago. It's been a COMPLETE pain in the ass ever since not long after its warranty expired. I got that exact kind of thing for a long time, "fixed" it temporarily by pointing a big desk fan into the side of the open case.

As I said, it finally gave up. We've come to the tentative conclusion that it's just drawing too much power, as it seems to have clobbered the (good, newish) PSU along with it, and this would go some way to explain the ridiculous overheating issues (which persisted after replacing the cooler with a rather heavy-duty thing and cleaning it and so on).

I intend to avoid ATI from now on, incidentally.

it's strange to me that it's only affected the content of the window and not the toolbars etc. I'm not so surprised that it's effecting a 3D accelerated game. Presumerably firefox/IE are using the gfx card to render the webpage moreso than Windows is for the toolbars etc?
