Graphics card/Monitor problem(?)

I have a shuttle pc. It was running vista and had a 9800pro in it.
I decided to install linux (ubuntu) so I turned off, and wanted to do it as a server, so removed my graphics card. Unpluged the dvi cable and inserted the analogue one in to the onboard graphics.
Turned the shuttle on, it sounded fine could hear fan, lights came on, but nothing on screen.
I put the graphics card back in and tried analogue there, still nothing on screen.
I tried dvi, still nothing.

I tried an old monitor which definatly works, and still nothing on screen from either graphics card or onboard (and i remove the graphics card everytime I test onboard)

I tried removing the cmos battery but still nothing. I've removed each stick of ram, so unless its both gone its not that.

Any ideas?

To be totaly honest I havn't used the pc for gaming in ages and can't remember, but I could have.

However if that was the case, it would work when i plug in my 9800pro wouldnt it?
