Because it shows a lack of respect for the person you're talking to.

maybe youre looking into it too much.
its just a forum for starters, its not affecting anything major except supplying deebs with alcohol.
i dont put much effort into capital letters etc but at the same time im not conciously thinking "i disrespect these d00dz so ill type badly".

There is no excuse for a badly written email in pink Comic Sans 16pt.

YES THERE IS!

I've adapted to people sending me emails like that. I find it more interesting when companies send you newsletters full of typos :D

It doesn't really matter whether it affects anything or not, its like the online equivalent of talking with your mouth full. It doesn't have to be a conciously disprespectful to still be bad manners.

i wouldnt say that.
talking with a mouthful usually means you spit food everywhere.

lack of typing skillz doesnt have anything similar to that.

imo that is.

you can easily read what ive typed here so i cant see the problem.

People say they don't mind poor grammar but when they see a paragraph of text that isn't punctuated they will all complain that it is basically unreadable. Grammar is important as it is the binding that allows complex thoughts and explanations to be cohesive and comprehensible.

Anyone that thinks people typing with a decent standard of spelling and grammar are "talking down" have serious issues, both with their own level of happiness and their relationships to the world. If someone talks to you with proper spelling and grammar, it is normal. If someone uses (so-called by the prescriptionists) "incorrect" grammar and mumbles their words when talking this is not normal, and makes what is being communicated ultimately all the harder to decode: it's considered the norm (using a standard grammar and spelling) in all other forms of communication to the point that considering the alternative doesn't ever come into play in normal (by that read non-academic) life.

if someone mumbles when they talk you cant quite hear them.

if someone types a sentance like this without capitals you can still understand it.

this is where im finding it hard to see the problem with shitty typing on a forum.

Since when is mumbling (e.g. the lazy pronunciation of WORDS) only comparable to capital letter usage? Idiot. This is part of the problem with debates like this, the people on one side are totally uneducated about the subject to be able to competently think. My personal view is it's not hard and it can be important, although I couldn't really give a crap what people do as long as it's mutually intelligible. The point is the less you use standard grammar and spelling, the less intelligible it becomes. That is all. Sigh. I don't know why I bother sometimes.

when did i say ONLY?

idiot

this is part of the problem with debates like this. one side thinks they are super clever and knows everything about everything. what they fail to realise is some people simply dont give a shit about typing correctly unless its important.

usually i have to write accuratley in an academic style. being able to type how i want without it having an affect on anything is rather nice sometimes.

I find grammar pedants to be a pretty dull bunch. They ignore the whole point of language which is to communicate idea's in favour of applying a set of silly rules.

English is a language built on exclusions and rules breaking so looking to straight-jacket it is faintly idiotic and ignores the fundamental rule that language is dynamic!

Similarly with spelling, if you can understand what they mean then the language has done its job.

I cant help but feel that the pedants have some lingering feelings of inadequacy as they seek to assert themselves.

Thanks Dukat. Don't like to admit it but I'd love to go round and correct all the mis-used apostrophes in England.

tris-: Considering the post I was responding to had no form of indication that you were in fact talking generally, and not specifically, it was safe to assume you were only talking about that one aspect. Perhaps if you had used a more 'academic' style and hedged your point correctly then it would have been understood.

See what I mean about mutual intelligibility? Your post's lack of correct style for your point meant that some of your meaning became lost. ;)

That's a total cop-out. Yes language, and English in particular, is dynamic, but the rules of grammar actually have a purpose, particularly in English, where the verb endings don't do any of the heavy lifting they do in other languages. The inclusion of a comma in the right place can completely change the meaning of a sentence! I just think if you want to make a point, why should you expect the other person to pick through your sentence to work out what the Hell you're on about?

I agree if it actually changes the meaning of the message.

Its the ones who like to score points when the message is clear to everyone that annoy me.

Everyone knows I'm a grammar pedant. While I admit I do it to annoy people. I think there has been a massive decline in the standards of English in the past few years. I certainly see it in my every day working life. I, as some of you know, work with a lot of foreign people. English isn't their first language, so very often find myself as the conduit between German and Spanish for example. Being correct in both spoken and written English is important to get the correct meaning across. Also since it is the only language most English people speak, we should be able to get that absolutely right.

I personally treat this as a practice ground for stuff that I would do in real life. You cannot always know how things will turn out until you try them. The sandbox that is IRC/Forums or whatever is the perfect vehicle for this.

This response feels odd. Your formation of sentences gives the whole passage an odd lilt. Many people would use commas in their text. You only seem to have discovered the full stop. Try a comma. Commas are nice. I like commas alot. Commas mean you can make better sentences. The comma key is near the full stop key. Did you know this? Maybe you were trying to put commas into your post. Who knows? I miss commas when there are none.

I like commas.

I think there has been a massive decline in the standards of English in the past few years.

Indeed, the misuse of "went" and "gone" in Scotland is frustrating and makes people sound... thick basically. It's permeating all of Scottish society, the footie commentator even said "the ball has went inside" during the Celtic / Man U game the other night.

For fuck sake, how hard is it:

It went,
It has gone,

Not:

It has went
Your payment has went through

Another common one amongst fuckwitted Scotsman is "seen" and "done".

I saw,
I have seen,

Not:

I seen it on TV the other night
I seen him today
