GPU Temp question

my 3870x2 runs at around 79 degrees c is that too hot? or is it ok?

It's rather warm if that's just an idle temp but otherwise nothing to be really worried about. Might be worth looking at adjusting the airflow in your case or maybe even removing the card's heatsink and reapplying thermal paste, just be careful if it covers the ram, they usually use thermal pads which often get destroyed easily.

I think i know what the problem was.

Did a bit of looking around and found out that certain 3870x2s the fan doesn't go above 25% even when playing games!

So i downloaded that Rivatuner thing and pumped the fan up to 40% now i can actually hear the graphics card where as before i have always thought it was a little quiet!

Ah, thought that issue was a hardware one (on the new 4850 and 4870 cards) but in that case it sounds more like Catalyst's doing as you say.

It was a driver issue for the 4800 cards too, they were capped at 25% regardless of temperature, but a simple edit in the .xml files and it could be solved :)
