Gout

anyone have experience of dealing with this? my mam has multiple conditions and this morning an attack of gout occured. i dont know how serious it is and im not sure her doctor explained much except to take the anti inflamatorys and something else.

i know i can help by doing shit around the house so she can rest but does anyone know of diets or other things i can suggest to her (from your own experiences)?

I was told I had it a few months back, GP told me nothing and was totally useless they just gave me a photocopied a4 info sheet and some anti-inflam pills.

I dont think theres concrete evidence of it being linked to diet but the advice is to reduce the amount of purines in your diet, exercise and drink less, which is pretty much a standard response to most problems.

Whether you trust it or not, Wikipedia's normally quite helpful on this kinda stuff so long as you keep positive and read a bit critically.

There's not really a lot a doctor can do for you directly other than give you the information about it - the best ways of treating it currently on top of antiinflammatories as far as I know are lifestyle changes, especially as its occurrence is not fully understood scientifically.

I don't know how you were treated exactly, but what should your GP have done other than give you the diagnosis and information, Bob? :S What did he do badly?

Am not meaning to question what you're saying, but I'm a medical student (early years lol, I know very little) and that kinda feedback and knowing what others do wrong might help me out a bit in the future \o/

I had a severly swollen foot for 3 weeks, not being a moaner i did nothing about it, however the pain was rediculous and somebody suggested it may be gout, so i saw the gp, he looked at my foot and said take a blood test next week, so i did, got the results by phone, and yes its gout, didnt see the gp after that, just got some pills and the leaflet left at reception.

I often name my characters in games Gout because it's so cool.

No booze and low fat diet helps alot with gout, a friend has suffered with it in the past and the only thing that cleared it up was a total lifestyle change of both a healthy diet and regular exercise. Gout seems to be the body's way of telling you to get your shit together before something serious happens.
