Is it me, or is Google getting worse?

It seems that now, whever I search for something, I get two pages of crap before finding what I want, when I used to find all the information I could want on the first page.

I'm guessing this is because people know how to 'cheat the system' and get ranked highly, but either way, it's very annoying :(

Depends a lot on what you're searching for and the exact seach terms you use. I probably get about 50% of my searches turning up good hits on the first page. IME some people are just crap at coming up with relevant search terms. "Did you do a search?" "yeah, used google, nothing" ... "so why'd I get 5 good hits on the first page for the obvious search then?".

I find that if I'm looking for info on any kind of electrical appliance, Google shows me two pages+ of price comparison sites.

Other kinds of searches are fine though.

Exactly.

I was searching for a review of a Panasonic projector for a home cinema. Did a search for it, about three pages of kelkoo-ish sites with massive spammage of pop ups.

Interestingly, there seemed to be dozens of random urls directing me to the same page. http://www.random-domain-name-that-sounded-like-an-online-retailer.com/panasonic.html

I guess it depends what you're looking to achieve - if you just want to buy a Panasonic TV then surely the 'Kelkoo' sites are exactly what you're looking for. If you just want to find out how good it is the search for 'Panasonic TV review'.

Google works just fine just as long as you're specific as to what information you are trying to find.

I read an article last week on Search Engine wars and there was talk that Yahoo's new search engine (As they've cancelled their agreement with Google, as of two months time) is, apparently, going to be even more pioneering in its workings than Google. It also talked of, rather worryingly, how Google has various policies on recording a user's searches for up to two years, which can be released to authorities upon request.

I find the Google 'cached' facility to be invaluable.

Google works just fine just as long as you're specific as to what information you are trying to find.

But in some cases, even when you are specific, you still get heaps of pap clogging up the space. And as has been said, it mostly seems to be the kelkoo and epinions sites which get returned to you.

Do Google have a moderation system? To prevent the hundreds of strange search sites named things like "panasonic k97-gh television review" which have scammed their way up the rankings, at least.

I just searched for 'pussy fingering' and ended up spending 10 mins or so reading a guide on it.

Got a few pointers (boom boom) so i'm gonna try them out during the next session.

Anyway you will know when google is buggered when you search Google for 'Google' with the 'Feeling Lucky' button and don't actually get Google.

Suppose what should be done, is for people to be licked in a room with a terminal and a mission to join, and stay part of, a q3/cs/random-lame-fps clan that's active in a league or something. Feed them an irc client and let them pick it all up.

We were all noobs, once.
