So Google have finally mapped all of Britain and made it available to view online.
Google Maps with Street View

On the one hand it's handy to see some of these places from the street level. On the other hand, it's damned intrusive to see your own house, car, garden, even windows online. If you object to having your property shown online without being asked, you can have it removed easily enough. Just follow the instructions here...
Remove Your Face, House, Car from Google Street View

Don't know why people get so upset by their face, house or car being on google street.

It's no different from someone walking past said house, right?

Yes, how intrusive having a picture of the area you live in being put online. I mean it's not like it's possible for anyone to walk past in the real world and see these things if they chose to do so. /sarcasm

That's the next bit of canal restoration for my local canal group. Stupid tippers, move! The brick bit of the wall is the towpath access. If you zoom out to aerial view and look southeast you can see the first restored section.

Anyone got a spare £50,000,000 or so, to do the rest?

Troll ;)

Not that I'm particularly arsed about it or anything, I still want to ask the question (just for thoroughness): If there's nothing to be made from it, why would Google be doing it?

He didnt say theres nothing to be made from it .. Obviously ppl will pay them to uswe it and the innformation in other applications .. but what he is saying is that its no more invasive than someone walking past your house and looking at the garden

Infact its probably less so because its on image from (in the case of my house) at least a year ago so its not like upto date with camera images of the outside of your hose second by second

Neither of the two houses i reside in are on it :(
Your own fault for having cells with a view of the courtyard instead of the road.

They will eventually put it into their Google Maps navigation system so you can see your journey turn by turn at street level, as a map or as a satellite view. (if they haven't done so already - they may have done in the US I think)

One of these days a "head up display" navigation system will be on your windscreen in every car...

Read what Moriath said and ofcourse it's for profit.

I was addressing the people(in the world) with bugs up their arses for "privacy invasion".

Now troll off :p

Most people with issues about StreetView invading their privacy fall into two camps:

1. Google drove up private roads/driveways when they had no right to. This is a legitimate complaint and Google's defence is weasel words bullshit.

2. People have been caught in the street or in places doing stuff they may not want others to know. This is more difficult; on the one hand, Google can justifiably say that could happen to anyone at any time anyway, and how are that different to appearing on a news broadcast or a blog or whatever? On the other hand, you can't ignore the permenance or the scale of what Google are doing, so it is a bit different to getting caught on film on the back of a news outside broadcast or something. However, Google do at least have a mechansim for getting yourself removed from any offending pictures (although by definition its probably too late by then).

So on balance I'd say in case 1 Google are definitely out of order, but in case 2, tough, and we'll have to live with it; just remember to look out for Opel Astras with a camera on top next time you come out of that strip club you're not supposed to be in.

I've always wondered what the legal status of "private road" is. It surely can't mean that only residents can enter it, that's nonsense and farcical.

Well, yes it can. Some places (not so much in the UK, although it would apply to my London flat which is in a block with a private perimiter road and Google haven't gone up it) have private/gated driveways. Post is delivered to mailboxes at the entrance and the road is just that, private. The particular example of the Borings, the people in the US who sued Google, was in exactly that situation, a private road, clearly marked "private".

I think it depends, a private road can become a highway (i.e. a road over which the public have the right to walk or drive) if it has been in use by the public for a significant period of time. Seems to be more likely to happen to private through-roads tho, and rarely something that would happen to a cul-de-sac. If it's not a highway then afaik the owner can impose any access restrictions they like, including erecting fences at entry points.

Possibly not the best example to use considering they lost their case against Google.

Thanks for the clearing of privacy thingydoo, i can see why private street(closed community) would have a problem.

Though people living on public streets getting a rat up ze hiney about it is a bit silly.

If you don't want people seeing you doing something, don't do it :D

Yes that includes masturbation. God is watching

I'm in two minds about this.

On one hand, I think it's truly excellent and it helps hugely with directions and checking the location of something from your own home such as the purchase of a property without wasting time looking at it on a Saturday morning. On the other hand, it does seem intrusive, public road or not.
