Just like to say goodbye to Gamesinferno and thanks to all the admins who helped to keep the service running.
I hope to bump into some of the regulars some time......... were any of you GI users???

I nearly went to work for thier parent company (powernet). I guess I made the right choice when they went bust two weeks later.

Seems GI lasted longer

Pretty good FA scene they had if i remember right. Had some good times on GI servers. Allways a shame to see good gaming servers go:(
One step closer to the pay for service i guess.

Aeons ago some members of the War Hammer Clan (ex Wireplay Quakeworlders) were given access to a P2-400 machine that was sitting in an ISP's server room connected to a large amount of bandwidth. That gave rise to www.warhammerclan.com. They ran a few game servers on that box and wh.com became a very popular website.

A nice big Telco came along and gave these people money and lots and lots of servers, so the gamers moved to Manchester and went about setting up gamesinferno.com.

At one point GI had the biggest game server farm in the world (i got the gamespy evidence somewhere). I remember just after Star Trek Elite Force was released we put some servers up giving us more STEF servers than Barrysworld had. The chaps at BW obvoiusly noticed this and so they put more servers up. So we put more up, and so did BW. I can't remember who had more up in the end but there were lots :) Friday afternoons playing STEF on the GI machines was nice, and the admins day we had one Saturday was great fun :)

Unfortunately through no fault of their own GI wasn't able to pay the wages one month when that Telco went bust, and so they were all out of a job. Not a nice time i can assure you and it took us all quite some time to get back on our feet.

For the past year GI has been running, but with fewer servers and no actual paid employees - the outstanding set of admins GI had did it all in their spare time and they did a damn good job of it.

Personally I think we're all going to be paying for GSPs within the next few year or so, since the availability and relative cheapness of broadband connections means that revenue from diallups (for GSP's at least) is going to disappear quite soon. NGUK and Thrustworld are going for it and i think the rest might have to follow. I was never 100% sure why Wireplay stopped their tenner-a-month in favor of the 0845 call rates anyway :)

It was good while it lasted. Certainly the three months where i worked full time for GI were the best working days of my life (so far!) :)

GI burnt itself out as fast as it arrived tbh.

For a while last year we where running more fps servers with more people on them than both BW and WP combined...

In UT alone we peaked at just under 500 players online at once ( something like 15% of all online UT players in the world where on our servers back then)... but with Powernets collapse it got hammered , and the funding never arrived after that to let it rereach what it was.

Shame it's finally gone, nothing like going out with a whimper though

/shrugs ;/

The server is "#gamesinferno" I believe
