I've recently found that my monitor frequency is dropping from 85Hz while in Windows and in many games, to 56Hz. It doesn't happen in all games though. The games it does happen in are:

Battlefield (hasn't always happened fyi)

and also when switching from windowed to full screen mode in EQ2.

Anyone know what the problem can be? I haven't always had this problem either. I have an ATI RadeOn 9800 Pro with the latest Catalyst drivers installed.

I previously had refresh rate switching problems with my 9800 pro, though they were not quite the same as what you describe. I corrected the problem by turning off the monitor DDC information. Its one of the options in the catalyst control panel. It effectively stops the card from using the monitor limitations and forces what you select in display options.

m8 ur problems with winxp, it likes to take too much control (there for the pc illiterate's benifit). it switches your refresh rate, purely for compatibility reasons. for example, if ur monitor could do 85hz at 800x600, but you ran games at 1024x768, your monitor might not support 85hz at that resolution. it lowers the refresh rate to make sure u dont blow ur monitor basically.

i know nvidia drivers have a refresh override, but ATI's own drivers don't. you can get the omega drivers, here, which are far superior imo, but some people encounter problems with them. i used them for a long time until the new catalysts came out, and theyre great.

or get a program called reForce. dont know if its stil in production, but u can get it off my web here. its simple enough to use, but if you have any problems give me a shout on here
