GOA ever Again?

We all will move on at some point to an other game. And I was wondering how manny people will ever go back to a game that GOA hosts?

I myself will take the US version from now on, and prefer the low population of player then a higher population and having GOA again as support/host.

more people got oppinions?

Personally I would never consider joining a game run in this half-assed manner where one company develops the game and hosts in one continent, and another hosts, and fails to translate content in any reasonable timeframe for another.

1 month would be a bearable, if bizarrely long period to localise and launch patches.

3 months is just silly.

(And incidentally, I don't care remotely whether the delay is due to Mythic's undocumented heath-robinson style code, or GOA's lack of resouces/skill)

The PoS 'servers' don't endear me to GOA either.

tbh, I'd skip the US version as well, and find a game without a separate EU hosting company.

There's an interesting story on PC Mag (here) about "inside Mythic". Mythic has six dual processor machines dedicated to each server, which they think are capable of handling up to 20,000 players per server simulateously (they limit it to 4,000 top prevent overcrowding). By my calculation, given that Excalibur never tops 2,500, Goa must be running it on a couple of 33MHz 486's.

Anyone want to donate money for them to upgrade? Oh - we already are. Hell, anyone wanna donate them some hardware? I've got an old 1GHz PIII machine - it's got to be more powerful than whatever they're using now...

Those servers would die long before 20.000 people log on, realistically. That hardware is not any better than what's being used on Avalon and other upgraded servers.

In fact, the upgraded servers exceed the hardware specs provided by Mythic. Unupgraded servers meet or exceed the older server specs, but SI and patches have added a lot of server load I'm guessing.

The 20.000 figure is probably obtained given perfect player distribution over the physical machines. During a relic raid, the majority of the players are in the same zone and thus on the same machine. Say Excalibur can handle 700 people in Hibernia mainland (including frontier). The total server would be able to handle 6x700 = 4200 people online, under ideal circumstances.

The next online games I play will NOT be the ones hosted by GOA.

When making a choice of game I'll look at the following, in that order :

1- NOT GOA
2- not another French company
3- good gameplay, do friends play there, nice graphs, etc....

LOL thought the U.K. just did in the middle east and the French didn't want to come then - jkin monsieur just bored and chuckled to hear the most xenophobic insular country in Europe complaining bout their fellow Europeans not being internationally minded hehe

Fact is that usually french companies (not only in gaming industry) don't give a damn about Brittish customers cos they are way to Amarican to them.

For the french it is already bad enough they have to play American games. But then, if they can't even host a ready made one, how would they be able to create one?

I just meant that I'm not gonne take the risk anymore to get the same 'service' from another one of them.
Next time I'll pick a Brittish or American company.

Actually unless anyone has any real experience with frenchies who are working on international level just shut up? Because french do work together ok with the british on the tunnel and with the concorde. French also are in the europe space program and the few frenchies I actually met in games have been ok.

french have joined in the euro which Great britain has yet to do. France with Germany were the 2 countries in Europe who actually got the whole EU started with their steel and somethign agreement(sorry forgot the exact purpose of the agreement and to lazy to look it up but it was about metal).
Great Britain is the isiolationist here in Europe to be perfectly honest. Almost whole of europe didnt want that war, actually almost the whole world didnt want the iraq war. It was Uk(the majority of the people didnt though), spain (90% of the people against it), poland(no id but they ended sending a few medics iirc) and the USA. So uhm who is exactly internationally minded? The french who had same opinion as prolly 80% of the world population or the UK?
If the french are arrogant pricks, then so are the english. As all both have people who are arrogant about their country in equal measure or close to that.

I think goa does a reasonable job allthough the excal server must be updated NOW or actually should have been done ages ago. Other than that they do ok and unless you know how the french/german servers were before the updating. You might not want to claim they treat english customers worse as you have no clue if thats true, besides it might just be unlucky. However if you think goa sucks thats up to you, but its just plain racist to think a french company cant be good.

No it was Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands that started it all by creating the BENELUX union thingie :) the whol steel and coal union came later (I think)

the first convention about customs was made by the benelux . First economical step was the coal and Steel union. Benelux existed in 1948 and benelux was trully created in 1958 when the existing agreements came in just one treaty and where the economic union of Benelux was created:p. In 1950 was the coal and steel union.
So depends your viewpoint :). However the point still remains that the first real step done internationally was by the benelux and german and france. So you cant call France less international minded as the UK as they are that definatly not:p.

try again i'm german living in France (Strasbourg :border between France and Germany) working in Germany, playing on German/french(english sometimes) servers

France with Euro (currency) : 1999 (by referundum)
UK : no (yet !)
France in Schengen ( checks at common borders are completely abolished) : 1990
(Yeah every morning i go from France to Germany without any check and the evening it's the same thing)

Well the European union was sold to the UK, probably everyone else as something completly different to what it is trying to become now, mainly a superstate to rival America. The UK did not and does not want to have its forign and financial policies governed by unelected "dictaters" in brussles.
But this has nothing to do with Goa being totally crap at what they do, I wont avoid french companies in future some are probably good at what they do, nobody springs to mind but using our server farse to judge a nation is kind of stupid.

Only common borders we have are Wales and Scotland - and we dont need any checks there ( although they should check the Welsh!! - kidding :) )

I Served with some french soldiers on an exchange, when i was a Royal Engineer nice blokes, a bit snotty till they knew me but all in all ok. They told me about their brand new aircraft carrier, to save costs they put in a reactor from an old nuclear sub and apparently when it goes to battle stations and all the elctronics come on the reactor shuts down!! ( not powerfull enough)

crap soldiers though...

I've no problems with how daoc's being run... the delay in the patches is an inevitability with a translated game...

now if you change the question to "will you play a translated, slightly delayed, euro version on separate servers again?" I'm not sure :)

would be nice to get the latest and greatest stuff - but that said we get some protection from the nastier exploits and bugs introduced in the original version.

You don't understand what is a "common border". For example a italian can go (travel, work, ...) in France, Germany, Spain ,etc. without any Visa or passport (Shengen). It is like the borders between the states in the USA.
And UK is the only EU States that didn't sign the Shengen Agreement.
