gl_max_size at its default values of 512 and 256(?) shouldn't get you into any trouble. Best to check the hlgaurd site or ask natrat though.

If you lower it, you potentially make all the textures blurry, making enemies standing next to a wall easier to spot (no detail to camoflague).

This is the reason why it is considered a cheat. If you have this in your config.cfg, even if its the default (256 or 512), and you re-execute your config.cfg, it kicks you for cheating (or at least it used to anyway).
