Kenny's chastised me for saying "Throw away the child". Heh... Children that say crap like that do scare me though :( My friend's little brother went through a stage of saying "My name's not James, it's Henry, and you mustn't talk to me like I'm a child as I'm older than you are. When I died, it was sad."

Admittedly, my first instinct is throw the child away, but in light of Kenny's shocked response, I've moderated this to keeping it in a cupboard. Or something.

Reading Xanes stuff was interesting though -- I was interested in researching ghosts in a group but Ive been kind of put off as I assumed it would be full of people like he describes ;)

Also worrying -- what will Essex ghosts be in a few years when all these headless horsemen and monks etc have to share their sites with ghosts of Sharon and Tracy in white stillettos, forever waiting for Wayne in his ghostly XR3i to give them a lift.

I've been there too with a mate. Was kind of creepy. We just ran around the fields and stuff. I have a ghost story to tell later though.

Okay, so my ghost story....

I was in bed with one of my ex's round her house one night. In the middle of the night I woke up, not really with a start but kind of as if I'd just woken up from a nightmare or something. I just had the feel ing that something wasn't right. (ewwww. gettting goosebumps typing this)

So this feeling of fear/dread/spookiness grew and grew. My feet were outside the bed and I quickly drew them in. As everyone knows a duvet is an impenetrable shield that wards off all sorts of ghosts and daemons!

By now I was seriously freaked out. Then I got this REALLY strong image of a crucifix on the wall. Just a normal sized one about 8 inches high, nothing massive. I prodded my girlfriend after a while just to get her to verfy we were both awake. I told her I had just had a weird experience but didn't go on. It took me ages to get to sleep after the spooky feeling had gone.

So in the morning I tell her the whole story and ask her if there was ever a crucifix on the wall and pointed to the spot. She confirmed there HAD been a crucifix on the wall but it was YEARS AND YEARS ago that it had been there. There was no marks on the wall like sun bleaching or anything like that to suggest that anything had ever been there.

That's prolly the spookiest experience I've had.

She told me of a few other ghostly experiences in the same house. When she was a kid both her and her sister used to share bunks in that same room. One night her sister had some friends over. All of a suden a mirror hung on the wall just started banging against the wall. The door was closed and no windows were open so it wasn't a draught. It stopped all by itself.

Another one was something the cleaner saw. The house is a converted barn and as such is quite open plan. The cleaner was downstairs farting about when she saw a person out of the corner of her eye going into the upstairs master bedroom. She assumed it was my ex's mum and went up to talk to her. When she got upstairs there was no one there and moments later my ex's mum walked in the front door.

Her mum also reported seeing a ghost a few times in that same bedroom. She reported figures standing at the end of her bed and turning the light on and nothing was there. There were also times her dog, a massive german shepherd, freaked out and would bark at mid air, the same spot she saw these figures.

Aparently the barn was used as an army stable. When they were doing some stuff in the garden, they found a complete skeleton of a horse.

There's a really old friend of the family who was actually quite embarrased to mention that she could sense ghosts. She wasn't dotty at all and as I said got quite embarrassed when anyone mentioned her experiences.
So being a nosey kid I asked her about it one day and she told me...

Being old her and her partner used to wander round stately homes. In one room of a home they were viewing she got a very strange feeling but said nothing. After they had left the room she asked the tour guide why there was a Beefeater (you know, them soldier type people) standing in the room. The guide said "There wasn't". But she did go on to say a few other people had reported ghosts in that room.

A few years later she was going round another stately home and got the same feeling although this time saw nothing. She asked the guide/ticket collector as they were leaving if that particular room was haunted and he replied it was. Spooky.

If you want to go to a scary place, try the Michelam Priory, near Brighton http://www.touruk.co.uk/houses/houseesuss_mich.htm I did some filming there a couple of years ago, for the Wellbeing channel I think (cable stuff). On this occasion I was doing the sound. We had a tour of the place, the guy that ran it was about 35ish, and he explained the history of the building. He said that for the first few weeks he took over the running of the place, he was terrified by the goings on (bangs in the night, breezes from nowhere, etc). He said that one night, he heard a set of drawers in his bedroom move. The scary thing was that one leg of the drawers had a broken castor, and that the whole thing simply dragged itself around.

Theres a big barn next to the priory, me, the cameraman, presenter, director, this bloke, and his gf, all had a really nice meal followed by wine and much beer at the end of the night. The director and presenter (both female) went to the toilet, and a couple of minutes later I followed them outside, and turned the lights off in the loo (this after much talk of ghost stories etc). I never thought a person could be deafened by the sound of 2 women screaming, but I came pretty close.

The Priory has lots of secret passages, hidden doorways etc. Me and the cameraman had a scout around some of these passages, and guess what - the torch battery ran out when we were deep inside. It was pitch black, and I'm amazed I didn't break my neck (one of the passages exited over the top of a huge fireplace 10 feet below).

Apparently there is a partially collapsed underground tunnel, that leads off to an orchard at the side of the priory. Each tree in the orchard marks the spot where one of the monks was buried, an apple tree planted over his grave for obvious reasons. There is a well, the contents of which are unknown (very expensive to get down in it and clean it out). Imagine what stuff would be down there.......

Anyway, the filming we did precipitated a pilot for Most Haunted, which I couldn't work on, and sadly the series got commissioned, and they used the crew from the pilot, so I didn't get the job :(

There are lots of different rooms in the building, but the spookiest is the children's room. Its quite small, and the walls contain needlework, some of which is 200 or more years old. Each has been made by a child, and contain poems about the nature of life and death. Its quite chilling to read words written 200 years ago by a young child lamenting the fact that when she dies she will never see the sun again, or the fields, etc. Not very nice. The spookiest thing in there was a small cot in the corner, and a child's doll on the cot, with what I can only describe as an evil look on its face. It was looking at the only window in the room, and I got the distinct impression that it wanted to be out of the room. My hairs are standing up on end as I write this, remembering that room. Apparently, some of the staff will not enter it.

I've never seen a ghost myself, if I did I hope I would be rational, but more likely I would just shit myself. I have a vivid imagination.

Grew up in an old house that had been around at least 200 years, didn't really see or hear anything out of the ordinary in 18 years. It used to be a butchers shop so it saw penty of death and is right over the road from a graveyard that has been around since 1100! Heard loads of stories from other people in the village (all the buildings are pretty old) but never saw anything myself so I can only conclude it's a load of rubbish.

Apartment block I'm in now has some really neat old catacombs underneath it. Full of old machinery and stuff. Went down there in the daytime to find my electricity meter and it was pretty scary, will have to investigate it at night some time :)

I always wanted to spend a night in a haunted house or forest or something, but have never found a group interested in that sort of thing :(

firstly, im sceptical about the whole supernatural thing, that is all.
heres my shitty story.

my mum's dad died so her and my sister went to the philippines for his funeral. anyway, while they were there, my mum's mum died, supposedly of a broken heart. my sister happened to be in the same room as the dead mum's mum's body when she died.

so anyway, my mum wanted to stay a bit longer for her mum's funeral. blah de blah de blah, they came home.

back in england now, my sister falls ill. she starts walking, talking and acting like my mum's mum when she was alive. apparently, she could see my gran in the mirror when she looked in it, when she looked at her body, it was my gran. she looks at her hands, arms, legs - all looks like my gran [according to my sis]

now cuz philippinos are very superstitious and religious they bought all this, and thought it was my mums' mum trying to contavt us somehow.

the whole of my mum's family started praying for my gran and my sister. they held some sort of exorcism in the philippines. my mum was talking to my sister as if she was her mum. asking her to please rest hersefl and leave my sister alone, yada yada..

my sister went to sleep with a massive fever, high temperature and everything, sweating, blah blah...

... she woke up fine...

theres my story. if you was able to follow it all and understand it, well done, cuz i think i started confusing myself there.

still sceptical about this ghost shit tho.

I was sharing a house with a friend at the time this happened.

I was in my room listening to some music while my housemate was making some food in the kitchen. All of a sudden I heard hell breaking out on the stairs and he leggedd it into my room, looking paler than a snowman in a flour factory. He told me the kitchen door had opened all by itself and that hed felt something cold pass by him.

I laughed and told him it was the wind or something, but he insisted that he wasnt going downstairs on his own again, so I made for the stairs with him cowering behind me. The Stair bannister is one of those with thin poles and you can see right through them.

As I got halfway down the stairs, I saw movement coming from the kitchen and two figures dressed as Roman soldiers walked from the kitchen door, crossed the dining room and walked into the opposite corner of the dining room. As they got halfway, they looked up at me and my friend than disappeared into the wall. I could only see them from the waist up as their legs seemed to be under the floor. I promptly ran back upstairs through my mate and into my bedroom.

The next day someone visited us and said that an old woman (who we didnt know) had stopped him outside her house and told him to tell us that the men were back again, and that we would know what she was talking about as we saw them last night.

After doing a bit of homework we found out that our house was built on an old battleground from the Roman age of Britain (ie just off the a49)

Im getting chills just writing this and I can still see the faces of the Soldiers as they looked at us.

Heh what a success that channel was!

Haven't seen the series of most haunted (keep well clear of uk living - utter shite) but saw the thing they did on Halloween in Edinburgh. Thought they put on a pretty good show myself, reminded me of that thing BBC1 did years ago, ghostwatch or whatever it was called.

hmm. once I was staying with my aunt and uncle in Hoorn, a village near Amsterdam here in Holland. Nothing spooky at all there, but as I was bedding down for the night in the loft their cat came in to my room. he was walking about as cats do, but suddenly he looked like he'd seen something in the air near the corner of the room across from my bed. he observed the whateveritwas for a few moments as I watched him and then went into combat mode and hissed at the empty corner of the room with all his might before taking off like a shot through the open door. I was slightly freaked out heh.

oh, and once I made a glass jar explode. I don't know how though. I was about 14 at the time, there was this jar on the table in some place I'd never been before. iirc we were there to pick up a cat we'd gotten. I was fasinated by the jar for some reason and frequently glanced at it. suddenly, with a sound like a lightbulb popping (you know) the jar burst. there were two other people and my mum in the room (sitting at the table) at the time.

that's about it.

Ok, two stories from me.

First, Christmas Eve, about 10 years ago, my Mum told us in the morning about how she had had a dream about her Mum coming into her room at night, kissing her on the forehead and telling her that she loved her. That afternoon we got a phone call telling us that my gran had died. My Mum was a little freaked out, to say the least.

Second, what I can only describe as a guardian angel story. My Mum, me, my sister and my Mum's friend were in the front room watching TV. My mum had put some chips on for us all. All of a sudden there was a crash from the kitchen, as though something had fallen on the floor. My Mum went to investigate and found the chip pan on fire. Promptly she put the flames out and looked around to see what had fallen on the floor. It turned out to be a small letter holder that you hang on the wall, that had a little poem on it.

The poem was somthing along the lines of, "In your time of need I will be there. I will always be watching out for you. Friends forever."

We could find no reason as to why this had fallen off the wall.

Spooky.

I should have had read this thread, I'm scared now :(

I've never experienced anything spooky but on a school residential in year 7 (I think) we went to a youth hostel on the Welsh/England border in the Forest of Dean called St Briavels. It was an old fortress type building, it had a moat and everything. There was one room which had a type of well in the floor, which was about 10-15 foot deep and they put people down it to die. The room this was in was a bedroom, and I think it was on the girls side of the hostel. Didn't hear of anything scary though.

I like to believe in ghosts, don't ask me why though.

My cat does this all the time, and he's just walked into my room meowing his head off. Awww :D

I'm pretty fucking glad I live in a house that's less than 10 years old now.

I hate you, Lou. This freaky painting shook me yesterday and last night I dreamed about the man/boy thing in it moving about and nobody would believe me when I begged people to burn it. They all acted like it was just a painting BUT DAMMIT THERE'S EVIL IN THOSE BRUSH STROKES!

I don't believe any of this stuff as I'm of the opinion that we're just a collection of atoms with neural pathways and there's no afterlife or mystic 'impressions' of dead people on the world.

But I'm not entirely convinced of that view either. :/

<@Add> i have a ghost story actually
<@mank> tell me it and i'll post
<@mank> \o/
<@Add> it fucking scared me the most
<@Add> EVER
<@Add> i actually did cry, heh
<@Add> i was youngish
<@Add> was about 13 or so, and even then i had a fucked up sleep pattern
<@Add> must have been about midnight, maybe a bit later
<@Add> i was wide awake, so this wasn't some hallucination
<@Add> and i went upstairs to run myself a bath, but the hot water wasn't working
<@Add> i hate when that happens, it can be for any reason in my house
<@Add> so i go downstairs, check the boiler's on yadda yadda
<@Add> it's boring up until now, usual BOILER NOT WORKING :-( story
<@Add> except it was working
<@Add> so i go upstairs and the hot water's fine
<@Add> ok, i should explain a little about the outside of my bathroom now
<@Add> the windows in that room are about 11 foot off the ground
<@Add> it's our kitchen roof they're above
<@Add> our kitchen is odd, it hasn't got anything above it, it's just, well, there like a little bungalow
<@Add> but it IS impossible to get onto without a ladder
<@Add> so anyway, i go "ah, nice, hot water"
<@Add> turn around
<@Add> and there's a fucking face at the fucking window
<@Add> i don't think i've actually ever screamed so loud
<@Add> it then turns around and walks away
<@Add> of course i've convinced myself that it was a hallucination :D
<@Add> but it scared the fuck out of me
<@Add> 11 foot people don't exist ;(

I dont personally believe in ghosts as I've never witnessed anything I couldnt rationalise away but I have always been fascinated by them and have collected a fair number of stories from people who had what they believed were ghostly encounters.

My family are convinced that my parents house is haunted - when my sisters were about 6 and 8 they shared the main back bedroom - one evening they rushed downstairs shouting about a black circle that was moving on the walls - the younger sister had spotted it first and pointed it out to the older one - they had watched it move around the wall for a few minutes before they became scared...

I was too young to know about this one and only found out a few years ago - I dont think anyone took it that seriously at the time...

In the same room about 20 years later my Father spent the night in there and had something sit on the end of his bed - whatever it was it so scared him that he dared not open his eyes - eventually the 'prescence' moved off.

He told my mother and when she told the rest of us we obviously took the piss which I regret now because he refuses to discuss it - he was pretty shaken up by it though and he often seems to sleep during the day now and leaves his radio on all night.

Additionally I was once very interested in local history and found out that the land my parents road is sited on previously had a moated house on it in medieval times and even more anciently had some roman burials in the area - a largely intact roman lead coffin was removed from the road about 20 yards from my parents house when they were digging up the road in the seventies - its now on display at the local museum.

Edit - Gah - spelling - I before E except after V!!!

The only experience I've ever had is a common one for this area. I like in a small town, parts of which go back to the 1800's, some parts to the 1600's. One of the oldest schools, Alfred Street School, along with a similar aged Infant school on Newton Road, share the same phenomina : what looked like period soldiers walking through the halls/grounds of the schools, but everything below knee level was below current ground level.
Many people have reported these sightings, my sighting was when I was about 14 : young, but old enough to understand things don't just happen without good reason.
Never did find a reason but did go on to investigate at the library similar occurings, to find it was well documented.

There's one house me and my group of friends always pass on the way to the local Snooker club on Saturday night, and it looks clear as hell to be haunted. One day I think we're gonna go investigate :D

<@Add> and there's a fucking face at the fucking window

ooh, jogged my memory there! growing up in indonesia, the strangest thing that ever happened to me was thus: one night a mate of mine and I were playing with some lego in my room while our parents boozed it up after a sunday night barbeque. it must have been about 9pm when we became aware of a -sortof- reflection in the glass of my room's window. now these windows were covered over with a wooden frame over this was the mosquito netting. apon closer inspection, it seemd that the 'reflection' wasn't in the glass, it was an "imprint" in the netting that looked like a face. us kiddies freaked out and left my room at the speed of light. parents calmed us and explained that it must have been some kind of animal, and that "whateveritwas has gone now son, look". that was nice enough but the next day I walked round the back of the house to check the netting. nothing.

another time I woke up due to the sound of really loud breathing outside my window. after being under the covers shivering for a bit I though it'd be best to get it over with and have a wee look. pushing aside the curtains I looked and saw exactly nothing. the breathing did get slightly louder though, if memory serves me correctly. after a while whateveritwas got bored and left, taking it's loud breath with it. now that really could have been some animal, given where we lived in the jungle. strange that I didn't see it though, I was a pretty sharp eyed kid.
something did start eating our chickens shortly after that though :/
