GFFX - Oh Dear

No doubt many of you have seen various reviews of the GeForce FX and while it didn't surprise me it centainly seems doomed to a life of noise, 70db at full whack, and only just beats the results of the Rad 9700 Pro.

There are supposed to be some MP3s knocking around of the fan being noisey. Anyone got a link?

That card seems to suck :)

If only I could trust that all games would run fine I'd be looking out for an R350 card next. The 9700 didn't fill me with confidence though after watching Medal of Honour with no textures on a friend's PC :/

I saw a german documentary with a guy from nvidia giving a demo of the fx just before x-mas...he was showing its rendering capabilities on a demo program....and all these error codes were coming up in the console...then the bluescreen of death and his windows sponataneously rebooted...poor guy was clearly embarassed...this program was screened nationally in germany :/

in fact here it is

The Anndtech web site has a review of the card here http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1779 with a link to an avi showing the fan in all its 77 dBA glory here;

http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/video/nvidia/geforcefx/review/nvidia.zip

The avi shows the card with the fan at the slow speed when its only doing 2D stuff, then they crank up the 3D pipeline and it goes into full monty mode.

With the bench marks they have and with the current drivers, the Radeon is the way forward. But if Nvidia release a proper driver set in a few months with the customary 10-20% increase, this thing should rock.

good review...anand tech....excellent

looks like part of a pinball table....you can hear the wind roar as the mic passes the fan exhaust :) (although technically its more like a turbine)

If you are curious, the card underclocked itself after running at a 540MHz core clock for a matter of minutes, and we couldn't get the memory up above 1100MHz too reliably either
methinks the designers put a little too much thought into that feature

Very.....I won't buy one simply because the noise is far too much for my liking, it is louder than a delta screamer :)

I bought the ATI RAdeon 9700 pro last week and I'm feeling very happy now the reviews are out, particulary as the comparison I read was against the top of the range FX not the plain vanilla card. I belive ATI are bringing out another card with the gpu at 350 MHz so I guess I'm no longer an NVidia fan.

On top of that the NVidia card sounds bad to me.

The article on Bluesnews from Carmack suggests there's little in it but the fx will run Doom "slightly" better. He does comment on the horrendous noise and says it bothers him. I guess it comes down to whether you want to trade off cutting edge graphics against actually enjoying the game with less background sound. Could always invest in a set of Bose headphones I suppose.

Shame the Ultra has been canned, so you're stuck with the vanilla FX which is barely faster than a non-pro Radeon 9700.

The NV35 and the R400 should be where the real action lies, although we will have to wait until summer for these (then again, the NV31 and RV350 will be here far sooner). That said, Chaintec's GeForceFX card is, if only in terms of sheer looks, a very interesting card :) . . .

My next card will most probably be a ATI solution :)

If I had to buy a new one tomorrow I would probably buy ATi as well. However, I think my Ti4200 will last longer and coolers will get smaller when production improves. And as coolers improve too.

I'm still not quite sure about the strength of ATi's drivers. I know they're coming on leaps and bounds, but I'll always recall what John Carmack once said (paraphrasing, of course). Essentially, nVidia are the only company which he works with whereby if he receives new drivers and something goes wrong, he automatically assumes it's his code and not the drivers. With every other graphics company out there, and I don't doubt he deals with quite a few, he's straight back on to them trying to get their drivers updated and fixed. That's quite an endorsement for nVidia from a man who's undoubtedly 'in the know'.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. That said, I wasn't half tempted when the 9500Pro came out; for features v price, that is one impressive card :)
