GF2 MX

I usually buy hardware online since it is usually cheaper but i just saw a Hurcules Prophet 2 MX quite cheap (also buying from a shop is less hassle imo).

Is it very Future proof or will i be sitting looking at terrible framerates in a months time. (like with my TNT2)

I have heard a lot of good things about it but i wanted to hear your opinion.

depends how you'd define terrible rates m8 :)
I'd advise holding off for a little bit longer

Well put it this way, in giants i could count each individual frame. I can play comfortably at 20FPS+ and high resolutions don't matter to much to me since playing a game in over 800*600 on my 15" monitor is just sore to the eyes.

Yep hold on to your cash, the prices will drop when the geforce 3 comes out. Last week a picture and the specs were posted at reactor critical, the picture was removed but the specs are still there, so i can't be too far away now. Nvidia are set to tell us all on the 27th anyway so my advice, hang on then get a GTS 32/64 they should be cheap then, you won't be disapointed iv'e been using one for ages, barr the good old V2, i don't think iv'e ever had a better card.

800x600 happens to be my fave gaming rez m8 :)

perhaps you should tell us what the rest of your system looks like so we can advise more accuratly.

ie. I have a 900Mhz athlon on a KT-7 wiv a GF 256 ddr pro and 256megs 133-ram

would I advise myself an MX? no tdc m8, wait till nvidia starts to dish out nv20's in ernest so the price drops.

ahh right ok here goes.

Celeron a.k.a Celery 400
Creative labs TNT2m64 32mb sdram (core @ 140mhz)
128megs of pc133 SDram
assorted HD's soundcards etc

I know my celery is part of the problem but i can't afford to fork out £200+ YET for a new CPU/mobo. I also don't think i would get my moneys worth from anything much higher since my celery puts a huge cap on framerates. The reason i want a nvidia product is because they apparently have exellent T&L and I want to take as much of the burden off my CPU as i can.

Well you might not advise yourself on an MX since you have GF 256 ddr pro, which from what i hear is better :)

Yeah the old 256 ddr is better than the mx imo, i run one on my 2nd computer still. Being a gpu card it will prolly help that poor cele out, and with a nice 32 megs of ddr ram your laughing. But hey getting your hands on a abit kt7 tbird 1gig combo these days is dirt cheap, allways consider that. I had a cele at the same spec as yours nearly 3 years ago, 3 years is a hell of a long time in the world of cpu's:) And also ram is so cheap these days, a nice bump to 256 is a good move too, i got my hands on 2*256 133 blocks last week for only 150 quid, christ thats cheap;) In general everything is so cheap these days, apart from high end gfx cards, no wonder nvidia's profits went up 70%:)

128mb ram seems gloriouse atm. Just upgraded from 64. Next i will buy a 256mb stick but that is quite low on my priorities list.

Yeah i have had this comp for 3 years, when it came out it was top of the range, 3 years is a hell of a lot of time in computer terms.

I know it's prolly not what you'd want to hear.....

but save up till you can buy a nice fast duron on a good mb.

stick all the stuff you have now on to it and you will be like a man reborn.

hey m8 i been here done this... struggling with a celly 400 trying to get better frame rates.in the end the only alternative was to buy a new processor.in fairness the p3 1ghz i got now has a gf2mx with it, i get 109 fps on q3 demo 127. (yeah on v1.27h!)
the card is good and fast , tho , not as nice a picture as my much maligned voodoo 5.5 lol.
one thing tho, after all that effort i still find meself playing q2 much more than q3....!so was it worth the effort? god knows...:)

Also worth noting tho that the TNT2 m64 u have isn't really a proper TNT2 at all. The M64s are utter shite cards. I'd get a cheap MX (60 quid sounds good, bet u cant get a GF1 DDR for anything like that cheap) and play at 800x600. Even on a Celly 400 u should notice a big diff over m64 without replacing anything else. As long as u don't up the res too high MXs r fine cards.

Yup just went out and got me one.

Ace

I am off to play another game :)

Anyway...

Got home plugged her in, fired her up. Opened up 3dmark 2000.

I get nearly 3 times the 3dmarks as i did with my tnt2. My framerate in the high quality heli game test is nearly double that of the TNT2 in low quality. I am happy.

Just put on the detenator 3 drivers and i am just about to see how far i can booster her clock to so bbl.

OMG.

Bump mapping, /me loves it.

Just been playing Giants:Citizen Kabuto again (i can acutally do it now that the Framerate doesn't drop to below 10 on the huge maps)

Giant Kabuto came round the corner and he looks awsome.
Tae a ganders at this screeny i took. It doesn't fully justify it, you have to see it in action :) (also i had to paste it into MS paint so the quality is somewhat buggerd)
