Firstly I'd recommend you wait until you've actually left school until you look for more involving part time work. Your GCSEs are important, concentrate on them first!

Also, do many companies employ people who haven't left school? The restrictions listed on this site seem quite severe, apart from Saturdays and during school holidays you're only allowed to do 2 hours a day!

Once you've left school then I'd say go for a decent part time job, but until then your education is quite important.

If a cv 8 pages long came on my desk, I would proberly think twice about reading it.

IMO cv's should be detailed enough but not too long. Employers dont always have hours to read your CV, especially when they have lots to look at. First page is important. I don't want to know that you live with your mum and dad in xraod new island. I want todo know what you can do, where you got your expereince from, and anything else relevant to the job.

Agree - in general a CV needs to be concise. But that doesn't apply to professions like doctors, lawyers, investment bankers (my profession), and financiers where you are expected to list pertinent experience at all the firms you've worked for. Let me tell you this - if I didn't list my experience, I wouldn't have got any of the jobs I've had.

I manage 55 people. I HAVE to spend a long time looking at CV's. If I'm paying someone £80000 per year, I wanna make sure they're the right people for the job.

If i had more time i'd pretty much have written what GR said He's right aswell, quite a lot of employers don't employ students who are still in school, after you've left though and are in your holidays/college it's a lot easier.

i just did my first shift today. my mate is a manager and he isnt thick in the slightest, he showed me how to do everything in less than an hour, then i was working basically on my own and he was there if i fucked up. they arnt slave drivers and it wasnt under staffed. it was actually a good laugh for 99% of the shift. all the other people are cool and if i couldnt do anyhting they showed me.

if people worked slow no managers were on their ass. you can either do it quickly or you cant, pretty simple.

im assuming its different if you dont know anyone when you start. lucky for me i know most people there

Something i'm a novice at.

I'm nearing my 16th birthday (already got my National Insurance Number :>) and I want to get a job. People are probably already thinking 'lollers, get a paper round - kids job' or whatever. I already have a paper round yet I yearn for more cash.

So I have a few questions:

Where is the best place to seek jobs for 16-17 y/os? Most adverts say 18+ yet I know a few 17 y/o's who earn £5 an hour constantly doing long hour shifts etc.

What sort of pay should I be expecting?

And any other general tips/hinters for getting a job at 16.

Do most shops seeking help put a notice outside? I've asked a handful of shops without a notice outside but they always said they didn't need anyone.

I'm completely new to this whole subject so any advice would be helpful.

When I was 16 i worked in a newsagents. They are mostly always recruiting for part timers. The best place though to look is sainsburys. They employ from 16 and offer a good wage. Failing that I worked at Pizza Express for a yr as a chef and I know they employ peeps to operate the pot wash and as part time chefs. They are classy restaurants (unlike pizza hut ) and offer very very good wages when starting out.

I plan on working on either MCP's or a CCNA in the near future Now I have 3 years experience i should be sorted

Seems a lot of people are doing this nowadays. My cousin is already out in Japan doing this, and someone from work is leaving to do this in September.

Working at your local supermarket probably the best bet. Most are fairly flexable with working hours though you can do extra shifts to get the cash in if your short. Best off you also will have alot of other people around your age aswell so its a good way to meet new people (im still friends with some of the people I used to work with @ Waitrose 11 years down the line).

5 days a week = £1250 a week
4 weeks in a month = £5000 a month
= £60,000 a year
After higher rate UK income tax and national insurance, weekly take home is about £900.

Yep, but.. in Norway things cost sometimes twice as much as it does in England. Say you wanna buy a decent car like Ford Focus.. You'd easy have to pay £20.000 for it in Norway. Probably more. A decent apartment is like 50.000~.
A meal at McDonalds is roughly £4-5.
So basically, it adds up. However, you could go to Norway for a summer vacation, work like fuck, and bring home lots of cash. We have thousands and thousands of people doing that every year in Norway. Mostly eastern europeens cos they'll literally live like kings when they come back home with like 5000-6000~ quid for working a bit over 2 months.

Ps; And tax are up to 36% in Norway, and that doesn't include all the other taxes and crap we have to deal with.
