Gents,

My old man recently spunked some cash on a 64bit Windows 7 setup and is loving every minute of it. My dad's a genius; he builds his own amplifiers and custom build loudspeakers and uses sophisticated software to design cabinets etc. The only problem is that the piece of software he uses is older than Throddy and won't work on Windows 7 64bit for love nor money (i've tried all the compatibilty stuff). The developer pulled support for his app a long time ago, so the only option is to build a Windows 95/98 machine or run a VM on his Windows 7 setup with Win95 running in it.

Now, I've only really used VMs that have been preconfigured for me (such as W2k3 servers at work, or training setups) and don't know what I need to do to set it up for him.

What do I need? What do I need to buy? Can someone provide me with *cough* stuff? Where can I find a guide?

Thanks muchly (if I don't get any assistance, I will delete my FH account).

If it'll run on XP there's an XP VM you can get for Windows 7

Otherwise, the easiest way:
1. Get VM software - there's VMWare player (From VMWare), Virtual Box (from Oracle) or Microsoft's Virtual PC (Click "Don’t need XP Mode and want VPC only? Download Windows Virtual PC without Windows XP Mode."). I've no preference, for what you want Virtual PC may be better as it's all Microsoft :)
2. Install said VM software
3. There'll be some wizard or other, make a new VM in your tool of choice with a virtual HDD and tell it what Base OS you want.
4. Hunt for a Win 95/98 ISO/CD and tell the VM to put this as it's CD drive (can't help you here, but the usual places may have what you need ;) )
5. Start the VM - install windows as if you've got a new PC :)

Sexy JB, just what the doctor ordered :).

Many thanks.

Edit: I think we've still got a legit Win95 CD.

It is very straight forward bud, I use VPC for quite a few VM's including Android, Linux and XP. Literally it is just a case of inserting the boot disc and running the install process, once complete you have a completely virtualised box with almost perfect compatability.

Hmm. So I've got an old game that won't run on XP AT ALL, I downloaded and installed VPC and downloaded a copy of 98SE. All the files seem to be there, at least it was verified by more than a few community reports but there's no ISO for MagicDisk to mount. Any ideas? Total beginner with virtual machines of course.

What files are there?

All the files are definitely there. Seems if you burn it to CD it's bootable but since I don't want to burn it to CD will imgburn allow me to make an ISO of the folder? If not what program will?

What do you expect me to say? There are hundreds of files, looks like somene has just gone into the CD, copied everything and put it online as an ISO, which it isn't. So hwo do I go about creating a bootable ISO from what is essentially a folder containing the files and folders found on an official installation CD?

Nevermind, sorted it. Waste of time though, game insists on running in 640x480 which makes it unplayable.

Aye that shit annoys me, someone needs to make a dos/windows emulator that does line doubling etc. Most of the arcade and console emulators do it with ease.

Edit : Seems DOSbox might be capable of doing that for DOS games.
