And then you took a detour to an Estonian orphanage where you took mounds of LSD and went AWOL for a month or two?

On a sidenote, on what other forum could a discussion about getting fit turn into a conversation about covert ops, LSD and strange estonian children?

RE making yourself go...I had the same problem for a while.

However, I've found that you reach a time, after about 3-4 weeks of going regularly, when it suddenly becomes addictive...you come out feeling great and going "Raaar, I can do MORE" and you start getting all competitive with yourself trying to beat times / weights / distances...just pushing yourself harder.

That doesn't explain how to make yourself go for those first few weeks, though i have found that as soon as you notice / feel / see a benefit that it gets easier...you're like "Bloody hell some muscle" or "bloody hell I can run up stairs" and that makes you think cool, it's working, so I'll keep going.

Plus my girlfriend kept going on about how great I'd look with some pecs...that helped.

Two kinds of exercise moomin

Aerobic - sustainable exercise (jogging)

Anerobic - unsustainable exercise (weightlifting)

For instance, if you ran 1 mile at an easy sustainable pace, thats the former. If you sprinted at an unsustainable pace (100m sprint say), thats the latter. The difference between the two is that Aerobic exercise mainly improves stamina, and overall physical strength. Anerobic exercise increases muscle mass and burns fat.

If you want to reduce your fat %, then concentrate on Anerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise actually burns muscle mass (beyond a point). From what you describe I would say you are doing too much running, and this will limit your fat loss.

Also, make sure you run on fields. Don't run on tarmac or pavement, you will cause long-term damage to your kness and back. Check this site out : http://www.orthaheel.co.uk/biomechs.html I have these they are very useful.

What routine are you doing in the gym? I used to do Back/Biceps on Mondays, Chest/Shoulders on Wednesdays, Stomach/Triceps on Fridays. I cycled reguarly so I didn't really do much with my legs.

Golden rule: Find the boundaries of what you can do and then stay within them. And very importantly, you must allow a sufficient period of rest between sessions

One more thing...if you can help it at all...DON'T STOP. I was doing really well for a few months then at Christmas I got ill for a week and didn't go. Then I put off going for another reason...then six weeks passed and I found I had to start all over again...so once you've "in the zone" so to speak don't get out of it or you'll lose that attitude that had you going back so successfully.

I didnt find that at all.

I went to the gym 3 times a week for about a year and have never really enjoyed it.
So I thought whats the point in doing something if you dont like it?

I stopped going. I'd much rather swim or go walking somewhere interesting. At least you get fresh air and a nice view.

Forgot to mention diet: If you want to increase muscle mass, eat more meats, fishes, cheese, etc. Cut out bread, pasta, and sugary foods. Don't drink too much water when exercising (for every 1lb loss in weight during exercise, drink 2lb of water), don't drink that crappy isotonic stuff or any sugary drinks.

I used to go to the gym when I was about 16. Ended up with quite a nice body but now I'm 23 it's all gone droopy (no not that...yet).

I don't really mind running/cycling/lifting while staring at the telly. The gym I went to had MTV playing and I used to try and time it to see Beavis and Butthead.

Used to do an hour and a half or so at least a couple of times a week.

My bro in Law goes down the gym and does the odd bit of sport but he meets his mates there and goes over an hour earlier than I even arrive back in town so going with him isn't an option cos he's set in his routine.

I'd like to get Damini to come down but she not into the whole gym thing really. She'd prefer to do some sports like basketball or something. Not my thing tbh.

Ho hum. Just rambling now.

/me goes to phone some local gyms.

moomin if you are going to continue running for the sake of you knees keep of the roads (impact) and make sure you have good running shoes.

TBH tho walking at a pace would keep you fit without jaring your knees

Yeah half decent running shoes are your best bet if you are just going to stick with running.

try running up a hill on your toes, you'll probably fall over?

I do roughly that routine with an added session of legs. I follow up with 30 mins of cardio every time.

Havent been all week but reading this ive decided ill go tonight.

If im trying to build a little muscle i should stay away from the cardio stuff? I usually do 20mins rowing, 20mins on the cross trainer(cycle quite a bit at the weekends as well). Then do a round on the weight lifting machines.
Im quite skinny and thought building a little muscle would be nice. But after 6 months of training im still the same :-/

what you say makes sense actually but i have always been taught that the machine should have a slight incline (0.5 - 1.0) as it puts your feet in the right position.

may have to question the gym instructers now.

If you want to build muscle, do less aerobic exercise, and concentrate more on the weight lifting. Each lots more meat and fish (protein, the best muscle builder), and within a month you will see the difference.

Yeah building muscle is all down to food. Eat and eat and eat, but good clean foods - most bodybuilders will recommend eating 6 meals a day. If you aren't gaining weight then you can't be gaining muscle so need to see about upping your calories. I think you can't go wrong with drinking huge amounts of skimmed milk. I normally drink 2 litres a day and mix in some whey to increase the protein level. Some people complain about casein being a slow release protein but you can't really beat milk for the price.

Free weights are definately the way to go as well. I know it's not good form to pimp other forums but I've got loads of info from Muscletalk. Definately a good place for advice if you're fustrated with your lack of gains.
