Getting phit

For the last few months I've been going to the gym regular(ish) bout 3 times a week. Now why I have noticed some benefits (I can get up stairs now without being too bothered, also sorta redistributed weight from phat to muscle), I've ramped up my program, but I dunno if I'm over doing it. Example

This week I have jogged over 10 miles, played 5 a side for 2 hours, and been to the gym for a 1 1/2 hr session, whilst also reducing my food intake. But I've found my leg can get really sore. So I dunno if I'm doing too much.

ANy advice?

Whether you're doing too much depends on why you're doing all that exercise in the first place.
If you just wanna get fit in general then thats way too much.
If you're training for summit in particular then you're nowhere close to doing enough.
However, if you're trying to loose weight/tone up, then you'd do better changing your diet and doing moderate exercise to start with.

...or something :)

is that short term or only a long term issue? I've heard that it can damaged jogging but I always thought it was for long distance runners.

You may have the old shin splints.

That's if the pain is localised to your shins. Try to lay off the high impact stuff for a while to see if the pain subsides. That includes jogging.

/edit

tbh you arent really over doing it imo (only really 4 and a half hours of exercise there), But your body will need time to adjust.

Part of my lower leg does hurt maybe thats from the footie though. If pain subsides tomorrow (will have day off) see if I can up to 3 miles, athlough I'm not sure how your meant to increase your actually distance

Swim instead of run....you will get a much better all body workout and you wont hurt youself.

Unless you hit the sides or the bottom....or drown

Get a bike. Less impact on the knees (ie. non) and far more pleasurable (assuming your in a rural area)

One tip though, if you do get a bike, make sure your saddle is set to the right height, or you will end up doing damage.

Basically, with one of your pedals at the very bottom of its stroke, put your heel on the pedal, then adjust your seat height so that your leg is straight. When you pedal using the ball of your foot, you should have a slight bend in your knee at the bottom og the stroke.
If your hips are swaying, your too high.
If your knees hit your chin, your too low.

:)

whilst also reducing my food intake.

Why? That's only really necessary if you're on a diet. You can get "phit" with a normal appetite y'know*. :)

*I know, because i eat like captain obesity, but look like an above average mesomorph**.

*flex*

**Nice site

Well the only other thing I can suggest is to cut your legs off. The benefits of this are as follows:

A) They will no longer be sore
B) You would lose a considerable amount of weight

sometimes i think people take it overboard at the gym doing 3 hours at a time or what ever. since the start of may all i did was cut down on the fizzy drinks and chocolate and went to the gym for 40 minutes every other day (30 minutes rowing level 9, 10 minutes on the bike) and ive lost just over half a stone.

This thread got me talking with someone in my office about getting fit and/or going down the gym.

I really wish I could MAKE myself go down the gym. I always think up some shitty excuse.

Commuting means I stumble off a train after a long journey after 7pm and I just feel wiped out (having also been up since 6am).

Then the weekend comes and I have other stuff to do... lawn needs mowing, shelves need putting up, games need playing (see how I snuck this in to all the worthwhile things?), relatives are popping round or need to be visited etc etc.

We don't have enough room or money for one of them fancy rowing machines mentioned in the other thread although I'd really love one.

Has anyone thought up any tricks to MAKE themselves go down the gym? Full body photo on the fridge? Buying a full length mirror for the bedroom so you keep seeing your out of shape flabby body?

I used to goto the gym a lot but stopped coz running for 20 mins without anything to look at was torture :/

As for weight-training I find it easy and not a bother I just worry when I'm heavy as anything and can't run anywhere (but can lift loads :/)

Also that site said I'm fat

if you do any running on a treadmill set the machine up with a slight hill increase, this will help your feet strike the floor in the correct position i.e heel - toe.

if you are running flat footed you wont be doing your legs anygood at all.

Shite attitude :)

A lot of us have previous experience with a lot of real life issues. Does it make us less qualified because we aren't doctors etc. ?

No it doesn't.

Tbh the last person I would accept diet/fitness advice from is my GP as he is a seriously overweight man.

Think about that...

if you are running up hill you are more likely to land on the front of your foot first.

i.e. toe to heel

because you can do ju-jistu rolls and impress your mates

NOTE

doing this at 3am after 10 pints on a gravel road will lead to some sort of f**kup, and leaving a large red gash on your nose the next day :s

BTW I've finished work now

time to head back to sunny wigan and get lashed
