so i have lived in england for 20 years. i am currently studying to degree level at a recommended university for my course.

i speak fluent english.

i have achieved 68 and 80% thus far in my scientific mathematics modules at uni.

yet for 6 months, i cannot get a job. no matter how many applications i put in, where i put them into, i cannot find a single job.

but BEHOLD!

someone clearly not from this country (or at least poorly educated), who cant speak english correctly, needs a calculator to add 2+5 and then take 7 off it, gets a job.

how does this work? in what mother fucking way is that person better suited for the shittest job you can think of than i am.

i am desperate, i need a fucking job. why does it goto some random bastard probably not my country instead of me?

SOMEONE TEL MEH?!

and how exactly do they get experience when they a)cannot speak english and well, im not sure what other reasons i need to give.

if you are working in an english speaking environment and cannot speak english, how do you gain experience there?

i suppose my other main point there is why should an immigrant whos been here for 5 weeks get a job when ive been jobless for 6 months and lived in this country all my life?

Depends what job you're going for. Less qualified people get paid less; and are less likely to leave a casual job (as they won't be offered much better). Maybe you're over qualified?

Besides, you can have all the qualifications in the world; without experience, you're nothing.

Or maybe they're illegal (ie very cheap/free).

I've had this myself at various times.

Just after I got my 2:2 in Engineering I was unemployed for 16 months. I sent 100's of applications, went to 50-60 interviews, and always got to the final stage in each. Finally took a 2 week temp data input job, got made a Quality Engineer by the end of the first week, stayed there for two years, and things sort of took off from there.

Recently made redundant, so back to looking. After a bit of failure, took my wife's advice and got temp jobs, shifted from one to another, gradually getting more money and more experience, and then got lucky and got a silly money contract.

My best advice is to keep trying, and register with temp agencies, going to them in person occasionally to get them to keep you in mind. Any job is better than no job when you're needing one.

Other countries have the same type of jobs as the UK you know?

so if this mr immigrant was so happy in his job there why the fuck bother to come here? regardless of experience, im pretty sure you need a C in english language at GCSE level to get most jobs here.

eggy: im going for any and every job within my limits. the full range from the shittest of the shits to the higher paid temp jobs.

At a guess the main reason people will be reluctant to hire you is because you are studying and they are probably assuming that you are only looking for a short term position at best, before you get a much better job. If you are not already, try lying and say you have finished studying.

You could try applying for a job with a callcentre there are heaps in the UK and they are always looking for fluent speakers and students are normally accepted fine aswell.

Btw Foreigners normally have a much harder time getting a job in the UK than locals do by far. If one got a job instead of you they probably were either better qualified, knew the person/had relatives working there, or just had experience.

Oh, a thought :

If you are going for crappy jobs, don't mention studying for a degree. Otherwise you'll never get them. Only mention relevant experience. They'll go for someone who'll not be trying to leave the job over someone who'll go for the next best thing when it appears.

Depending on where you are, I would say 'mr immigrant' is getting the jobs because... well... £ and $ speak a thousand words. They would lick your boots for 1pence should that be acceptable - look at why high paid jobs are moving abroad. Thats not to say you should sell yourself short.

I was unemployed for a while after doing college, its a pain... but go into every Agency you can find... explain the situation (Adecco / Select are a few good ones) and I'm sure the jobs will come flooding in. Temp. jobs are not that difficult to find, there are hundreds - and having seen a few recently... experience was missing by miles...

I'd say keep at it, but I found not thinking about it was easier... you may need money but worrying about it does not help

it seems to me though, if i havent had a job for 6 months i am happy to take the first shit someone will give me, and not risk moving on for some reason.

so then, i need to lie, and say i got 9 Ds at GCSE. it appears most people in the crappy jobs probably have this :/

Probably came over for better money, better prospects or a better quality of life. Those would be the main reasons I would travel to another country. I don't really agree with it, jobs should go to British citizens before immigrants & by British citizens I mean anyone that holds a vlaid British passport not white people...

Don't lie, just be economical with the truth. Say you got 9 GCSE's. If you don't tell the high grades, they'll think they are low, but you'll not have lied (which tends to be a sackable offence).

unfortunately businesses will always go after the allmighty ££
People with a lower standard of education/desperate are far easier to manipulate into doing things like overtime. They also tend to get employed as "temps", so they dont have to be paid a pension etc...
As well as the fact if your studying in uni they will assume you will leave soon as you finish (as said before), making someone who is likely to stay long term a more attractive option

This is why I decided to go the open uni route, I can stay in my job *as shit as it is* and then find my new job when I finish whilst still being in work.

Maybe they just think your a twat? Reading some of the stuff you have written here makes me wonder why anyone would want to employ you. Just because someone doesn't have 12 A*'s, a degree in astrophysics & chemical engineering doesn't mean they are any less suited to a job.

The same is happening in the engineering sector these days, they are taking cheap Polish engineers who can do a quality job and don't expect £15+ an hour. It is a sad state of affairs but the E.U. was always going to have this effect on the U.K. :(

I doubt most of the people here are like that off the boards, its easy to judge and be a fool when you do not see the person you speak to.

If your overqualified they wont employ you because you wont stay there long.
Also if your in education then you are limited to hours you can work.

What job's have you applied for? from that we can gauge what the issue may be.

Also if your french then you got no chance....

Grades are irrelevent now days, its only very specific jobs that you require specific grades, such as law or doctor etc.

who'd you employ, a guy who has done a job similar for 2 years with shit grades, or a guy with a C grade and no experience.

i think your gonna realise how little those grades mean, also the importance of knowing a guy who knows a guy who's looking for someone to employ...

as your starting to come across as "im amazing how comes they dont employ me" i'm gonna maybe knock some wind out your sail...

Is your CV good, by good i mean people who know about these things have looked? tons of CV's get binned on first impression, if yours is no good you wont have a chance.

how am i twat? i dont have anything at the minute except 4 B and 5 C at GCSE. i have only finished 1 year of uni, so i have no actually gained a qualification from it.

i dont see where i imply anyone should have such things you ask. what i am saying (if you did read it, you should know) is how come a person who cant speak english properly, probably not from this country, has no minimum C/C in maths and english (is this the bit you mistook for a degree in astrophysics) but can get a job.

where as someone who lives here, who has the C/C in maths and english, cannot get a job.

actually, im fairly sure you didnt read anything ive posted so far.

woooaaah there, im talking GCSE. im sure most people over 16 has at least 2 or 3 of them. if you check, most of the shittest jobs require ONLY a c in both maths and english.

and yeh, i think you missed my point. im not saying im better than anyone, how can i be with only 9 GCSE? its not something to boast about. what im saying is why do people most likely not from this country and cannot speak proper english get a job when someone who can speak fluent english from this country cant?

surely working in a customer facing role, you need to speak what the majority of your customers speak. im pretty certain english is the national language of england.

I think you are telling porkies a bit. I cant really see how any employer would employ an illegal immigrant who has been in the country for 5 months, in a job where they have to interact with the public. Sure, they may employ them as labourers etc, but not in a role where they have to talk to joe public.

hang on there, is everyone just reading what i type and making things up?! i never even mentioned illegal imigrants, im pretty sure that was someone else :p

i can give at least one example of someone who could only speak a sentance in english.

in mcdonalds, she asked what i wanted, i told her, she said "that it?" i said no bla bla, then she tryed to repeat back what i asked. it sounded like the noise a cat would make. and she didnt even ask for the money, just stuck her hand out.

i know they cant employ an illegal imigrant, unless the company is dodgy its self. you need work permit numbers and all kinds of shit if you are from abroad.
