A mate of minte offered to sell me his video projector for a mere 50£... He's bought a plasma-tv instead so he won't be missing it... The rich bastich!

Anyhoooo... The lamp is dead, and a new lamp costs from about 400£, but 450£ is still pretty cheap for a good quality projector. Should i buy this? It's not like i "need" a new tv, but it would be nice :p

you'd do well to get in touch with a lad called Big G. he knows just about everything there is to know about A/V stuff like projectors.
if you tell him about the projector you're thinking of getting he will prolly be able to give you the best advice.

also, we have a forum for all things A/V located here. I can move your thread there if you want. There is also a large thread about projectors here which may be of intrest to you.

Hope this helps!

What projector is it? If you're going to use it as a TV, you will need some kind of tuner and stuff.

For £50, you can't go hugely wrong but if it's needing a new bulb then you're going to have to spend ~£300 in total. You also have to factor a decent screen into the price, although i made my own from two tins of paint and a large area of wall ;).

The only stuff to look out for are the luminosity and the life span of the bulbs. The really bright projectors are still expensive (£1500+), but it's ok if you don't mind sitting in the dark to watch the screen.

The replacement bulbs can be pricey (£300+) and some of them don't have long life spans (1500 - 2000 hours) ... again the more expensive projectors will tend to have longer lasting bulbs (depends on the make though).

I'd say it's ok for a gimicky play around, but too expensive to run if it's a substitute telly.

No use for a TV, only for cinema.

Brightness is not as important as contrast ratio imo. Some of the best CRT projectors have a very low lumens level (hence need a totally blacked out room and a matte white screen) but brilliant contrast ratios.

Panda, i'll get back to you on the screen mate (just sat down at the PC, need some dinner).
