MSN Messenger has just stopped working at work :(

IRC won't connect either :(

And loads of URLs are blocked :(

Someone help me, I need contact with the living world, there's nothing to do, and I'm in a room all by myself.

Any ideas how I can get messenger or IRC working? Any way of using some sort of http tuneller? Do these actually work at all? Do I need another PC running something to translate http to the IRC protocol? I have my home PC on and connected all day and night, any way in which I can use this for any chat/messenger services from here?

Someone just give me some help pleeeease, I'm begging you :(

There is none to do. All PCs and networks are fine, nothing to fix, nothing to repair, nothing to maintain. And the boss is away.

I'm just glad this is only a temp job for 2 more months, then it's off on travels for meh :D

Someone help me pls :(

set up PCanywhere or similar at home, then connect from work (I'm assuming you have a high speed net connection).

You can then run all your chat and stuff on the box at home, with a window on your work PC giving you access.

If you have win2k, try terminal services.

Also, small program WIN VNC. don't know how secure this is, us it at work for TCP-IP connection and remote control.

Hope these help.

Thanx, I'll look into it!

I don't know if PC Anywhere, and the like, will actually connect from here though, because of the firewall.

Not sure mate, haven't really looked into it yet. Once I get a high speed connection, I will start playing. but afaik PcAnywhere should get through the firewall, could be wrong.

Let me know how you get on.

Or you could set up an eggdrop IRC bot and telnet into it, like me. Except my router is denying me a connection at the moment, untill I update the firmware.

#clan_mcnp is the place to go to chat to me, or "/query Will lo there" will do the job too.;)

One would assume (or at least, I would) that they left http access open fairly freely. Which usually includes 8080. b0rk's server has 8080 open.

irc.b0rk.co.uk:8080 :)

Worth a shot.

Aye, except all the URLs to IRC clients seem to have been blocked. Anyone wanna stick mIRC on their web space? :)

It also refuses any address with *irc* in it, so I'd need an IP to that server. Although, having said that, I think it does a reverse DNS lookup on the IP so it would know that the address has *irc* in it even if you just used the IP. :(

Good on 'em. They've clearly put some work into their firewall. Always nice to see.

Hard luck though, Exor. :/

you wanna try working where i am. the proxy/firewall system here is dead funny, all the most popular sites that get hit get blocked off. Which is a pain as they are mostly tech sites which help with work.. the rest are games sites.

The "fix" for unrestricted access was found within about 15mins of this system going live, even on our locked down NT boxes. But such fixes are frowned appon buy the audit peeps. :upyours:

An easier way for us and shows how simpleton the proxy/firewall thing is  was to use nutscrape and set it to "direct connection" which is dead slow and crap. The use of annon browser sites helps until they get locked out fairly quick.

winVNC is a great little program, I use it at home on the lan as I havent got enough monitors to go round :) it can be a bit shaky at times - but its free so who cares!

I used to use that one to connect when my DNS requests went pear-shaped. All sorted now, but all those happy memories:D

I can't connect to irc from work either, damnable proxies & firewalls.

BT are paranoid :)

That ties back in with the eggdrop thing I mentioned. A little bit techie, and not much use for him just now, though I know a company with very cheap shell accounts based in Mexico. And 90% of the users are UK-based.:D

Rofl!

I could just imagine the scene in jail:

Prisoner 1: So what you in for?

Prisoner 2: Running an illegal operation in Mexico

P1: Really?

P2: Yeah. :(

P1: So what was it, guns, drugs, labour, whores?

P2: Shell IRC accounts.

P1: YOU UTTERLY UTTERLY SICK AND EVIL BASTARD!

:D
