Now Owen is injured England will finally play 5 across the midfield.

Beckham on the right. J.Cole on the left with Hargreaves playing the holding role.

Both Gerrard and Lampard will get forward with Rooney. The final formation will look very much like 4 - 3 - 3. Rooney will drop back and play balls through to Lampard and Gerrard.

It's not about who is better it's being able to play both of them at the same time without one of them having to hold back while the other goes forward.

Owen is a big loss to England, but will force Sven to play the formation he should do.

I can't stand Hargreaves and would much rather have Carrrick play there. he had one match for England and would of been nervous and Sven disregards him exceot for injures. he played extremley well for Spurs all season and Hargreaves has struggled whenever he has played for england. granted last night he played well but he has no range of passes and can't hold up a break. Carrick is almost as good passer as Beckham and can hold up a break and even stop it. For me Carrick over Hargreaves any day.

Put Rooney up front on his own and its bye bye world cup. Rooney likes to play deep. This is where he is at his best.

Ideal is Rooney behind Owen, but Owen's gone. With a choice of Rooney behind Crouch or Gerrard & Lampard up supporting Rooney with a holding midfielder sat behind I'd take the 2nd option any day. Crouch doesn't have the movement or pace to trouble the top defences and we are too predictable with him in the team. Lobbing it onto Crouch's head might work against mediocre teams but it won't bother the likes of the Argies. Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard working together just might. Having said that, I can see Eriksson going with Crouch anyway
