in case you non-EU people don't know it, Germany is the current chair-country of the EU (since jan 1st), and they're pushing for the banning of violent games.

as we all know, video games are clearly the root of all evil, and violent ones are the worst, and we should never beg the question why some flipped out kid is playing <<violent game>> for 14 hours a day and never going outside, because obviously the game is at fault even before said kid gets his sticky paws on it. it sits there in the cesspit of evil that is the poota-game shop (run by a raving psychopath ofc) on a shelf while radiating violence and oozing insanity.

it almost makes me wish that someone would freak out and go on a death rampage and it would come to light that they play a totally non-violent game like World Snooker Champ 18 hours a day. obviously it would still be the games fault :/ anyway, since rock and roll is here to stay, television just makes too much money and book-burning is so passe, I suppose they have to blame something.

personally I blame burmese kittens for all the violence in the world. those ickle fluffy beasties just sit there, being cute and extruding death. I had one in my hands the other day, and after playing with it for a bit I just had to go outside and kill some old lady with a hammer. the cat told me to.

Germany's Latest Killer Game: Final Fantasy VII

"Two 17 year old boys were arrested for murder this past weekend in the small German village of Tessin, after invading a couple's home and stabbing them both to death. The police caught up with them after they had kidnapped a 15 year old female friend, bound and gagged her, and then held a knife at her throat for an hour before giving themselves up. The murderers' names? Reno and Sephiroth.

At least that's what Torben B. and Felix D. called themselves as they carried out the grisly crimes, and when the police seized their computer they discovered a copy of Final Fantasy VII installed. You probably know the rest here. In Germany, Final Fantasy VII is now being labeled as a "Killerspiele"; a killer game."

I find myself "influenced" by TV programmes alot more than computer games. I'm worried what might happen if I watch any more Dexter

EU Justice ministers are calling for a clampdown on violent video games, with the recently appointed German presidency leading the charge.

Germany has always been at the forefront of what some might say was 'overzealous' censorship, having green blood in place of red, or replacing human opponents completely, but with this news, it looks as though other EU countries could be looking for the same controls.

"A certain degree of linkage between the growing violence among the younger generation and the growing diffusion of violent games exists,” was the comment of Franco Frattini, the European Justice commissioner, at a meeting of the justice ministers in Dresden, Germany, on Tuesday.

The EU buzzword of harmonisation has also been connected to the report, stating that "The Commission wants to harmonise national rules in the 27 countries in the Union."

“Protection of children cannot have borders,” Frattini said. "The Commission wants to see a combination of outright bans on the most violent games, together with minimum age rules on other titles."

As it is, the German Commission is looking at the laws that each member state has, and will try to draw up union-wide standards.

There were times when one blamed the action and horror movies for the violence among teenagers *sigh* The sad and unsuspected truth is probably that our pets bring us to the dark side.

But seriously, in Germany there has always been a strong censorship. I've seen the movie "The thin red line" on a german tv, the most scenes with blood on them were cut und in such a way that you cannot understand what just happened. I hope they won't ban games though, it would be horrible both for the gamers and for the game developers.

not really. Germany is behind the 'green blood' thing for example, and there is a slight difference between unrealistic carnage and burning books.

germany invented violent porn ffs. they wont ban it!

i dont remember that part in the FF7 game, why did they cut it out ffs.

We had that too, you had to get a patch from teh interweb to change it.

Banning something like this is pointless and will make those psycho killer type people seek other ways to vent their frustrations, assuming they use games at all!

Personally I find it perfectly normal to kill things in games, but I'm not really a huge fan of pointless violence games. I think Manhunt was one game I started to play then thought, this isn't just a crap game, it's a crap game with a gimmick of extreme violence just for sales.

Why is it things are either banned or thrust into your face everywhere, there seems to be no normal middle ground for anything these days.

Oh and where do they draw the line on violent video games anyway? any FPS game since you kill people? any RTS since you kill people? any MMO since you kill people? etc.

it does seem a little simplistic to blame society's ills on computers and computer games.

Tbh they should be more worried about why those kids did what they did. I guarantee they weren't the full shilling if they called themselves after game characters.

I also guarantee there were more pertinent issues in their home lives that would lead to this occurance than playing sodding Final Fantasy.

it's not even that violent in comparison to some of the games available.

They obviously just took the loss of Aeris a little too hard. They should have watched Advent Children - they'd realise that she lives on in the lifestream of the planet and there was no reason to be sad.

Advent Children was probably banned in Germany due to some reference of a reference of a reference of maybe a nazi related thing.

Poor kids never stood a chance!

What I've noticed is that all these young murderers have been to schools and been taught mathematics.

ALL OF THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Fucking coincidence ?

Yeh right. The evidence is utterly clear.

Has every teenage killer been obsessed with games ? NO !

Has every teenage killer learnt algebra and long-division ? FUCKING YES !!!1

Seriously, if anyone can't see the infallible proof here then they are a fucktard.
