He isn't the best of actors; he seems to require certain roles which are quite abstract in order to shine and, much like Russell Crowe, the films with them as the central character with egos, they're just horrible.

MI3 and Master and Commander would be a prime example of each of them being dire.

Vanilla Sky and A Beautiful Mind were both fantastic films with fantastic roles for the two.

He's shit at acting in everything imo. Not good at all.

Even in Magnolia i was very aware i was watching Tom Cruise try to be someone else but the whole time he didnt convince me.

The only reason he's become a top actor is because he's generic.

Well that is a good reason to hire him for a certain movie´s ^^. Anyways, for me it whas the first and the last time i thought, fk me that IS Tom Cruise (ie. he's playing himself). Prolly also the reason he got that part in the movie.

I am fan of method acting, but not everyone has to be method acting to be good or convincing. Still, if you look at The Departed. There is a part in the movie (overall aswell tbh) where Jack Nicholson goes to sit next to Leonardo DiCaprio in a bar. You actually notice how bad DiCaprio is or how good Jack Nicholson is :p

Also i like it when actors change from the usual good guy to bad guy and see how they do (John Travolta - Pulp Fiction, Robin Williams - Insomnia, etc). Or for example in Jim Carrey's case, changing from funny man to a more serious role.

All this beeing said, i can't help beeing a fan of Tom Hanks :|

Makes me giggle seeing people mention Insomia in this thread, I was in the states on a lads holiday and we ordered this to our room as there was a massive electrical storm, and it was absoltuely lashing it.

We all fell asleep after about 45 minutes!!!!!!!
