I'm thinking of building a new computer and while ive used a geforce4 ti before and its great, looking at various benchmarks it looks like the radeons are better, are they better? and what are the advantages of both the cards?

Check out the threads, nearly all problems are related to Radeons, the Gforces were the cards used to optimise the engine, says it all.
My setup is a ti4200 with 1.2 duron/133 ram, runs very well on full settings, slight frame rate drop in cities, but latest mb/ram/chip should solve that.

I agree with Job
they might be faster, but they're not so widespread and well supported as the Gforce.
on top of that Nvidia's driver support is the best I've ever seen.

For the love of god dont get a Radeon.

Mines on its way back this weekend for a GEForce 4 Ti4600 - £30 more but worth it i think.

All my probs were with the KT400 chip set - cant speak for others.

/edit:

Here are some nice products for not a lot more than the Radeon 9500 pro.

http://www.dabs.com/products/prod-s...orce+4&lp=&up=&mc=&sc=&Refine.x=36&Refine.y=8

The Ti48000 AGP x8 looks nice (same as a Ti46000 with AGP 8 support)

(not so cheap)

and finally, the cheapest I found for a Ti48000 (fifth one down):

Thanks

Thanks for the help. Looks like i'll go for the geforce 4, if only i could find any info on where or even when the geforefx will be sold?

it's due for release fairly soon, I think.
I wouldn't bother with it right from the start tho, as it'll have all these nifty features no game supports yet AND you'll pay 600 euro's easily for it.

Erm im on a radeon 9700 pro here and i cant speak from a DAOC side of things but in terms of other games .. it fucking owns.

I was unsure to get a radeon with its bad driver support and other reported problems but it bloody rawks.

Athlon XP3000+
512 3200 ddr
Radeon 9700 pro

On windows XP Sp1 and i have had no probs.

Oh and BTW benchmarks are a complete load of bullshit.
No matter what anyone says take em em stuff em in the bin they are pointless :p

Anyway thats my 2p

works now :p

Very weird i have to say i have built my m8 a comp recenly with an Albatron KX400-8x and that is a Via Kt400 chipset. And he got a Radeon 9700 pro and its running like a dream..... very strange.

It's probably because your 9700pro card is a newer revision, the problem with the KTX400 chipset is related to rev.1 to rev.2 of the ati cards. I use 9700 pro as well, and it IS faster than a GF4! ;)

And another thing blame ViA for the Radeon lockups, they'r known to make "buggy" chipsets, that makes you PC freeze in combination with certain hardware...

RAdeon 9700 >>> gf4

PRO is a waste of money, for 70MHz higher mem 50MHz higher core or sumt ;-I

yup Soul very true.... but I'm a crazed hardware geek, so I wanted the fastest one ;)

erm.... No Just no

Theres alot more to a Radeon 9700/9700 pro then faster mem/core speeds.

And what u 2 said is what all ppl with gf4s say whenthey realise there spanky new card isnt the best any more =/

No the only thing that differs from 9700 to 9700PRO is clock/memspeed:

Radeon 9700: The smaller of the 9700 series differs in its lower clock speeds: 275/270. Official price: $299.

and check this url for more info:

I think u missed not only my point.. but ur original point.

U said a gf4 was teh same as a radeon 9700/9700 pro just highe clock speeds.

U are wrong
Yes teh dif between a 9700/9700 pro is higher clock speeds but between a 9700/9700 pro and a gf4 there is alot more to it..

Stop changing ur arguments :p

When did I say that the dif. between GF4 and 9700PRO was higher clock speed ?

GF4 is a DX8.1 card 9700 is a DX9 card, to put it simple the 9700 is a newer generation than a GF4 ;).

For the precise spec, if any1 is interested check the url i posted earlier!

U agreed with Soulfly who said

RAdeon 9700 >>> gf4

They are not the same not even a normal 9700 vs a bf 4 there more to it then direct x 9 compatibility like pixel pipeline and Antialising for a start.

Anyway :p

RAdeon 9700 >>> gf4 means that a Radeon is better/faster/etc. than a gf4, it doenst say anything about clockspeed ;)

So I agreed that the Radeon as faster/better than a GF4 and that correct ;)
And I know the precise Radeon spec, but I don't think any1 reading this forum care :p

Those who do know where do find the Radeon9700 spec...

<edit>

<tech mode on>
And fyi, the Radeon9700 features are geared towards one thing: DX9! All the new features introduced in the radeon9700, matches the new DX9 requirements, ATI even pushed Microsoft to add technology to DX9 that they knew they could deliver (pixel shaders 2.0 for instance) and nvidia can't (they use 1.1 and 1.3). It's true that 9700 has a faster implementation of Antialiasing and aniosotrophic filtering.. but that just extra candy :p. Though I love extra candy ;)
<tech mode off>

Slight differences in clock speeds, specs on the box ,mean jack shit in the real world.

driver/motherboard/gfx card/chipset compatability is everything.

Some people have all the top specs and the game runs like shit, it's very much trial and error.
That's what you get when you have different manufacturers writing different drivers for the same games, I m suprised it works at all

I have the Geofice 4 ti4200, but I bought it because, it's the best card IF you're on a budget.

However, if you don't care about money, then the Radeon9700 pro is better.

Just wait for Radeon R400 or Matrox Parhelia II, if you're not in a hurry :p GeForce FX might be a good choice too, provided you can take the scream from its fan ;)

Well copied and pasted agreiloth :p

And as u will find games developers in the langterm look to have there games push the latest technology now to its limits so in the future when the game is developed and ready it will be the norm as such :p

So all u nvidia fanboys :)
