get the ti 200 though!

(cos its a reasonable price (kinda) and its only like 10% slower (unles top res, fsaa, etc etc - and most benchys give the 500 like 10 fps more, but the levels are high already)

((in other words its not a difference from 1 fps, to 10, which is a large percentage, whereas 150 to 162 isnt))

get the nVidia Geforce3Ti - 500. it is better by far. also ATI cards are buggy in Windows 9x/ME and the radeon isn't fully supported by linux.

I look at a site that tested these cards head to head and I think the geforce 3 came out marginally better. The radeon won in some things, the gf3 in others.

To be honest though I agree with perp, its made by ati, avoid it. You know the drivers will not unlock the potential of your card and will probably cause you to crash, your wife to leave you and your house to burn down. (ahehahea)

Also I know someone who just got a ti200 and not a ti500. Its not as good, but as blokey up there said there isnt really much difference in it. You could get 360 fps, or 450 fps, like it really matters by that point. Its certainly not that much better to justify another 110 odd quid anyway. But hey the question was a "Dream system" so the ti500 :)

Redeon 8500 - Better IQ, Better 2D, DX8.1 compatible, more features, dual display, better FSAA (though slightly slower), drivers much better than folklore and anandtech would lead you believe, cheaper, perplex doesnt like it, will give you higher 3dmark2001 scores for bragging rights, isn't made by nVIDIA, so wont lose speed once the next generation of cards come out.

GF3 Ti 500 - 10fps faster at most (ie 230 vs 220). Less picky about hardware.

So I'd get the Radeon.

How can you get FPS' of 250?

FPS can only be as fast as your refresh rate and I don't know of any monitors that have a 250Hz refresh rate.

how many times?
the fps in q3 or whatever has nought to do with the refresh rate.and please dont tell me you cant see the difference, cos you can.
ahem.

As long as the frame rate stays above 60 you can't :)

m8 u can.go play q3 online.set fps at 150,then watch as it comes down in a busy area.you can "see" the frame rate slow up.

Technically its no longer doing 150 fps...............its the drop that matters and if you could maintain 60fps all the time then you wouldn't notice any thing.

ok ok take my system as an example.i cap my fps at 100.however on some maps if i run into maybe 5 or 6 ppl my fps can slow to 70-80.i CAN see the difference.and so will you if you try it :)

I already have......and have never noticed it that much. You tend to notice drops from at any frame rate but 60 FPS is the min before you can notice it in normal movement etc.

sorry m8 didnt see the first of your 2 posts.u may well be right,i play cs at 60 and q2 at 60 because other wise although my pc can handle 100 on them games easy ,i get image tearing on q2 and a sort of swimming sensation on the ground on cs.that may well be cos my refresh rate is 60 mhz, however it doesnt seem to affect q3,in the same way that having vsynch on or off makes no difference to q3 either.
btw dont suppose you know much about these det drivers do you??

Stick to the 21.83s atm as the 23.11s don't improve much fps wise and seem to be a little bit buggy atm.

my problem is in the advanced settings of me old drivers there was a tab called colour correction, enabling you to adjust gamma and brightness etc .i just got the new drivers for my rtcw crusade and tho that game works better there is now no colour correction,so i cant play q2.which with my clan commitments is a bit of a git.ive had to go back to my old drivers again.
dont suppose you got any ideas have you? does your driver have this facility?

I find the mouse feels less responsive at 60fps, as compared to 85fps. So much so in Quake2 that I basically can't seem to hit anything at all.

And yes there is a big difference between 60fps and 85fps in terms of jerkiness. I can easily tell the diff just by looking at it.

You only have to set your windows display to 60hz and then 85hz to prove this. I know fps and refresh rate are different, but at the end of the day your eyes and brain are only interperating how often an objects position updates on a screen. Whether that is limited to 60 a second cos the monitor is refreshing at that rate, or because your graphics card can only draw it at that rate, is not the point. You'll see the same affect on the object regardless.

mine's got it

chances are it might be a bug from the upgrade

For example, using the 21.81's on win2k agp got disabled - properties saying i had a pci geforce......

Out of interest though, since getting my ti200 ive had all drivers probs practically disappear.

What card you got? cos if its quite old (pre gf3) I really dont see the point in updating your drivers - the 12 series were solid on these cards (or drivers around this era).

If you wanan keep drivers try using powerstrip - its what i use here to get gamma up, etc (make profiles - laods settings as u load the game)

I got one of the first Radeons out and I took it back and bought a Geforce (ultra) at that time instead. The drivers were immature and many games wouldn't work with it. At least with Nvidia you are buying into a well supported product thats slightly faster (marginally than the radeon) and works on all OS's. I now have the G3 920 and it flies. I have to say I tend to stick with the best of the day. I used to be a loyal 3dfx man but Nvidias the way.
