Thinking about getting a gaming device to use while i'm away any ideas? i'm limited to about £1000 give or take i have seen the Alienware M11x which i am quite keen on as it's smaller then most portable devices and the benchmarks are impressive to say the least.

It's about £1059 though with:

Base: Alienware M11x Soft Touch Stealth Black
Processor : Intel Core i7 640UM (4M Cache, 1.20 GHz)
Display : 11.6in WideHD 1366x768 (720p) LCD
LCD Back Cover : Soft Touch – Stealth Black (No WWAN)
Ship Accessory : English Docs
Memory : 4096MB (2x2048) 800MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
Hard Drive : 250GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)
Power Supply : Alienware 90W AC Adapter
Power Cord : UK 250V
Battery : Primary 8-cell 63W/HR LI-ION
Graphics Card : 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M
Gaming Software : Steam Gaming forum and download application
Wireless : Dell Wireless 1520 (802.11n) Half Mini Card
Wireless : Europe Dell Bluetooth 365 Card
Keyboard : Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
Operating System : English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)

It seems perfect for my needs such as mmo's and a lot of steam games like TF2 etc and it is quite nice size wise, i've read a few forums and it's really easy to overclock the i7.

I have had a look at other laptops and they either seem too big and start becoming more expensive, any ideas?

11.6 inch screen? If by gaming you mean farmville, go for it.

it's really easy to overclock the i7.

yes, but in a laptop? and what would you see yourself gaining when you go from 1.2 GHz to...where? tbh I'd save money and get a nice lappy that is not one of those.

tbh that thing's got about the same specs as my Viao Z11, with the exception of the newer CPU. save money! choose life!

Laptop motherboards typically prevent overclocking.

That thing looks weaker than my 2 year old m15x, which should still be enough for MMOs, TF2, Battlefield BC2 etc, but will soon start struggling with future games.

Avoid Alienware like the plague, you're paying for the name.

My suggestion within your budget...
Asus X64JQ Core i7 Laptop X64JQ-JX016V - Laptops Direct

£950 gets you:

  • Screen size - 15.6 in
  • Processor - Intel Core i7 - 1.6 GHz
  • RAM - 4 GB
  • Hard Drive - 640 GB
  • Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Optical Drive - Blu-ray Player / DVD Rewriter
  • Graphics - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
More CPU, same RAM, more HDD, better GFX, more screen + bluray drive.
Notebook check compares the two gfx cards and the HD5730 spanks the 335M in most benchmarks.
Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
Notebookcheck: NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M

It seems to tick most of your boxes.

Anyone recommend me a good Wanking Notebook for porn?

Touch-screen would be great if it can be used by my bellend.

That's not very practical is it. Think of all the smears and stains on the screen that you would be cleaning off all the time. :)

The real problem as you start going up in screen size is the GPU has to start shifting more and more pixels thus to maintain a decent frame rate you either have to pay through the nose to get a decent GPU or accept you'll have to turn down the detail on a lot of recent games.

That laptop is a little to big for what i want it for basically i want it for playing WoW and the odd steam game like TF2 i thought the M11x fit the bill nicely but yeah i know people hate Alienware.

I'll decide this weekend before shelling out.

I really like the Asus or the MSI which one do you guys think is better for my money?

Devil 9700 DTX is nice also but can't seem to find a UK site that sells it.

Anyone ever ordered from PC Specialist.co.uk?

I'm building various laptops on there at some nice prices, anyone had any experience with them before?

I actually got a 17" gaming laptop first, but it was just too big and heavy for travelling with every week, so replaced with the 15"

I ordered off Dell on Sunday managed to get the above specs i posted on my original post down from £1050 to £900 with a 2 year warranty/free shipping.

The M11X just really appealed to me i liked the size and weight i think processor lets it down slightly but overall i think it's a really nice machine, my GF bought our current pc from Alienware 2 years ago so i know i'm getting a quality built machine.

It's in production and should be with me by 02/09/10 and that's from china so quite happy really.

Will be able to play WoW and FF14 (apprently the M11X doesn't do too bad with it) now with the other half from some crappy Travel Lodge now :)

Thanks to those who gave me some choices.

Don't know about you guys but laptops for me have always been about build quality first, then specs second.

Nothing worse than a tacky, cheaply-built laptop :\

I've been reading about it on various forums it's pretty good from what i've read obviously it isn't as powerful as the Alienware M15/M17 but damn it has some power for what it is.

It's perfect for my needs anyway.
