So after about 7 years of trusty service, I think it's about time to replace my Acer 19" gaming monitor. I was at a store recently checking out some displayed monitors running a demo. I was kinda amazed by what they display. My videocard is a Sapphire HD7700 Vapor X which is I think still pretty good, it supports HDMI and more of that stuff

Problem is... I know way too little about new generation monitors! Tell me what I should pay attention to? One thing I do remember is that the response rate should be good enough for gaming (my current one is 2ms)

Cheers amigos :drink:

I could spend around 200-300 € for sure. These things usually last many years anyway (let's hope) so it's worth investing a bit more!
Payday Inc soon anyway

There are two types of monitor. TN or IPS.

IPS has better colours, viewing angle (contrast ratio), however the refresh rate is not very good unless you spend a lot.

TN are what you want for games. The contrast ratio is lower. Move your head a foot to the right of your monitor and notice how it all kinda looks shadowy and black. The IPS is better for this.

I always use my monitor when I'm sat at the pc so I don't have to worry about viewing angles.

TN has the better refresh rate so you won't experience ghosting.

IPS/TN refresh rates are similar. most are 60hz, the ones higher are generally 120hz for 3d.

You can get some nice korean import 27" IPS monitors that will do higher than 60 on ebay.

All this talk about viewing apparatus...ie? and no mention of porn. Surely 60% of your time is spent lookingat it, so a monitor should fit the needs, not to mention have the low cleaning requirements and easy access power button for "oh crap" situations.

My monitor blew just before Christmas, so I went out and got one of these from Dabs.
Packard bell Viseo 243D
£99 + postage

Good size. Good brightness. Good clarity. Good refresh rate. Good colour. Even tone across the screen. No dead/stuck pixels. HDMI DVI and VGA inputs.
And light as a feather. I can turn it easily to show my wife stuff when she's on the sofa.

Packard Bell. Now there's a name I haven't heard for a while. I didn't even know they were still around.
