I am in the market for a decent gaming laptop, starting to get the PC games itch again.

I love the Alienware stuff but jesus it's pricey when you add things to them, not that I mind paying decent money but are they the only option? I want 15 inch screen maximum and would also like the Intel i7 CPU (or do I?).

Really out of touch with these sort of things, are the Intel CPU's still the best?

I have no room for a tower so that is not an option, yes I know I can get more for my money etc but I have no where to put one.

So, any ideas sweethearts?

Well there's basically no point getting any laptop if you want to play good new games on decent levels, they suck at it.

Wazzerphuk has a point, but if you really want the portability of a laptop, you can get something that will do. I personally can recommend Acer laptops. I bought one from them last year (Core i5, Radeon dedicated GPU, 4GB RAM) for £700 and it's been fine. I play HL2, Portal 1+2, FM2011 and (until recently) WoW on my 23" external monitor with no issues.

If I was going to spend over £1000 then I'd buy a good budget gaming PC for like £400-500 and the cheapest laptop I could find with a discrete GFX card for "emergency gaming". Or look for Dell XPS/Alienware second-hand on Ebay.

For about 2/3rds of the cost you could get a SFF PC, and still save space.

Ta for the replies.

I have no room for any type of PC setup, my PC room is now our bedroom, I simply cannot do it. I know a PC would cost half the price and do twice as much but until my kids grow up/get arrested I have no other option.

It does suck :(

Acer or Dell imho. The alienware range aren't worth the money though.

Dell are far too cheaply made these days. Flimsy pieces of crap, HP are nearly as bad for flimsyness.

Get the lenovo IMO, they may be fugly but they are solid and high spec.

But aren't AW Dell now anyways?

After building a decent spec Dell XPS system on Dell it was getting on for a grand so not so cheap that way either. I am a fan of Dell Laptops though.

My Dell 13z is so flexy the edge of the keyboard has marked the screen.

When did you buy it Wazz? All the new one's I've seen (and used at work), are bloody awful.

And I'll add my Aspire 5920G to that as well...

Coming up on 4 years old and still going well. I use it every day as my main machine. An nvidia 8600M GT graphic card means that it can still play current games at decent detail with decent framerate. Blur, Bioshock, Portal 2, TF2, L4D2, Mass Effect, ME2 ... all perfectly playable. FEAR and Prey needed some tweaks but were otherwise still looking good with good framerates.

=============

Now if I was going to get a similar model this year, I would be going for this model...
Acer Aspire 5942G Core i5 Laptop LX.PZY02.082 - Acer Direct
  • Screen size - 15.6 in - 1366 x 768
  • Processor - Intel Core i5 - 2530 MHz
  • RAM - 4096 Mb
  • Hard Drive - 640 GB
  • Operating System - Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Optical Drive - Blu-Ray DVD Combo
  • Graphics - Radeon HD 5650

£750 inc.vat
