I spose the only real reason I use Gamespy is so I can track my clan so I find them to play with and because I play Q3 and Q2 as well so it's nicer to have all the servers I play on all in the one place :)

The other nice thing about Gamespy (btw, you can then get into a debate about which is better, Gamespy Arcade, or Gamespy 3D - I prefer Arcade, looks nicer and seems to update faster) is that if the WON master server goes down (like it did last summer for like 2-3 days), Gamespy can look at other server lists (Gamespy has its own, I believe) and still find a game. When the WON master server went down, I foolishly did an update in my in-game server list, and since it couldn't get any info from the master server, I had no servers to pick from. Quite crappy. GS Arcade also has Player Spy, which is like a buddy list. It will put an icon next to any server that has one or more of your buddies in it, so you immediately know what server to jump into. Pretty slick...

Gamespy 3d is by far the best atm, arcade is good but has a few problems. A major problem being the lack of ability to save server lists.

I use Gamespy to find people etc.

Well, none of can deny that CS is inherintly unstable. How many of us have the no-sound problem that means you have to "esc" then "resume game"? How many of us get wierd wierd screen problems when you alt-tab out and come back in (albeit by mistake). I could go on all night...

Well, the CS browser is inherintly unstable too. Some reasons I hate it:

A) Takes AGES to update
B) The list just continually filters itself out
C) You're restricted to the WON list
D) Occasional strange pauses for no apparant reason
E) I could go on, but it's 3:30 am

Eitherway...when I first started playing CS I used the built in browser...now I've been playing it a while I ditched that for a more 'proffessional' approach

The built browser was placed in by the CS dev team for one reason, and one reason only: So newbies would be able to find a game to play. People that wouldn't have heard of such things as pingtool, and gamespy.

The cs team had nothing to do with the built in browser... it's part of half-life, and has been since the original release of half-life.

I use gamespy 'coz you can see how many peeps are playing on several different servers without actually starting the game up, also to send ip addy's of servers to clan-mates is easier using gamespy.

Buddy lists help find where people are playing.

I also find it easier to manage my server lists in Gamespy.

It means I can check out what servers are available and who is playing on them while doing email/looking at web pages/ ICQ etc. whereas once I'm in CS/HL I'm always loathe to switch out of it because the chances are it'll crash or my sound will go or some other annnoying problem.

Why you should use Gamespy:

1) Buddy lists. Easy to find your clan mates
2) It runs in Windows, rather than within HL. I don't want to have to load up Half Life, have it take over my machine, look for a server, hmmm noone on the server I want to play with/all the maps look dull/servers are full, so back to Windows, wait a few minutes, repeat ad nauseum.
3) It'll find servers for every game, not just CS (which is kind of useful if you play other games)
4) You can pick and choose what servers you want to refresh, and from where
5) Because I'm an old lamer who has been using it since it was called Quakespy and bundled with the first release of Quakeworld :)

:) i loved all those samples in quakespy!

anway, the only advantage that the in-game browser seems to have is that when you're trying to get onto a barrysworld server (nearly impossible in busy times)you can actually get "in game" quicker than in gamespy.

that said, gamespy is soooo much better.

arcade, on the other hand, is wank. is it just me or is it just horrible? server ping's are f00ked - all 200-300 + for me, and it always crashes.

:D - gspy is the king!

Gamspy is like 50x better than the half-life in game browser. IT IS ALSO FECKIN AWFUL Its been around since Quake, and they've got a huge bloody empire of planetquake's etc, and yet every new release of Gamespy, adds new support for a game, but things like the playerlists, are the same since QW. They show the skins as the two colours, 0,0. There has been virtually no good added features or improvements over the last year, and I wish someone would come up with a proper browser ffs.
