I have to say i am pretty dissapointed in this, it had very good reviews and i can see why. The game is enjoyable and the storyline is good but i have to say i always had that nagging feeling that i was ripped off.
I'll explain, while the story is good it is simply a re-run of gamecube version ported onto the wii. What i do like tho is that they added some extra content (aparently, i didnt play the original a friend who has told me there are new bits).
It keeps the puzzel solving signature of the zelda series, but adds 3d combat which i will admit is quite fun, different combinations of swings with the wii mote do different combat moves.

However, my main gripe.. there was so much potential to make this something more and they have failed miserably in the combat system imo.
The problem is that it is still a gamecube game, with its controls mapped onto the wiimote, not a game made for the wii-mote.
The combat variations are combinations of a wii mote swing and a button, the wii mote swing is the same regardless of what you want to achieve. If you want to do a normal swing you swing the wii mote, you want to do a overhead power hit you hold a+the same swing with the wii mote. In addtion if you want to thrust you push forward on the nun chuck and again the same swing on the wii mote. I think you get the idea, in addition it doesnt actually matter how or in what direction you swing the remote, as far as the game is concerned it is the same.
You may aswell have been given a joypad as it would make little difference, put bluntly this is just a lazy port of a game cube game onto the wii console.

The exception being the ranged attacks where you target by pointing at the screen, this i did like and made full use of the additional functonality of the wiimote.

My second gripe is that all the speach in the game other than the odd sound is all text based, again ported straight from the game cube. It would have cost them a little more but voice actors would have made this game so much more absorbing and shown this was a genuine effort at improving a old game rather than a straight port. Especially since the game costs £39.99 rrp, the same as games made from the ground up.

It's a good game, but why buy a £40 version when you can get almost exactly the same game for the game cube (playable on the wii) for £10 second hand.

Nice review also as I have a been looking at the Zelda game for a while quite wanting to buy it but something always put me off a little. Initially it was the fact i bought the console for multiplayer party fun not single player rpgs that would require long sittings.

I have no idea about the gamecube original so that doesn't bother me in the slightest however the lack of moves possible for swinging the remote does.

It doesn't come cheap also so I want to be 100% sure its worth it which from your review suggests it is definitely not. Solid game but overly dissapointing.

Quite want to get a game but not sure what yet. Zelda, Medal of Honour, Mario Football, Tiger woods.

Football looks the most interesting although a friend told me it was a one trick pony with only one real mode of play. Also when I played it didn't seem balanced and very complicated control system. <- i.e you will always beat your mates who don't own it as they won't grasp all the controls zzz.

Ideally I'd probally go for a shooter something like time crisis/point blank as i loved the shoot-em up levels on rayman. Does Eledees sound a good contender?

You are the first guy I've heard ever give this game any hard criticism..

I haven't tried it and I am really looking forward to try it out for myself, as I've played Ocarina of Times and Majora's Mask on N64 and absolutely loved both of them! Still haven't completed MM as I can't figure out to get some of the masks :D

Had a look at some more reviews/previews.

Mario party 8 appears to be utterly dissapointing.

Resident Evil 4 looks quite a nice adapted shooter/adventure providing you haven't played the gc version.

Not at all , it is a good game dont get me wrong. It's just it differs very little from the Gamecube version so if you have played that you should avoid this as the control interface is quite simply not worth the additional £10-£15.
If you buy it you will enjoy it, there isnt a lack of moves its simply they are mapped 1:1 from the GC version. It has a good solid storyline, the gfx are good (same as GC), gameplay is top notch.. it is everything the GC version was (in a good way), but not enough more for me to give it a good rating

-Mario Strikers is a must, i dont like football games in general but strikers really is fun over the net or with mates.
-Medal of Honour avoid like the plague, it is REALLY bad, the gfx are ok and the control interface is also not bad but the AI is riiculous. There are parts of the game if you take long distance shots from a range you arent suppose to the enemy will just stand there and let you hit them. In addition you could kill a team mate a few yards away and his companions wont even batter an eyelid.
-Tiger woods
My brother loves it, i dont like gold particularly so never really gave it a real go

Games to watch for, i personally am eagerly waiting for Mortal Kombat Amageddon and Resident Evil 4 (game cube port) for rescent releases as they have been given good ratings in reviews and look pretty good, i have them both on pre-order will let you know if they are worth the buy.

I was waiting for Manhunt 2 but that seems to be a ? now because the game was deemed to be unfit for uk sale.

Metting time will add more later

Link has never spoke in any of the past Zelda games. Yes you get the odd "ahhh" or "humphhhhh" but I don't think Link should talk or any of the other characters, its just tradition imo.

Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles
Project H.A.M.M.E.R
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

There was also on other which was a bit hush hush, red steel style combat but i cant remember the name :<

See, threads like this are why I wish they'd move the Consoles section up in the main forum list :(

Twilight Princess isn't ported from GameCube, its a multiplatform game for Wii and GameCube and was released for both consoles at the same time. The biggest differences with the versions are control system and mirrored world. Calling this "a lazy port from GameCube" just doesn't make any sense for the above reason. I've played both games just because it feels weird in mirrored way and I would never ever recommend anyone to choose GameCube version over Wii version because of the control system.

The lack of voice actors is a style and it fit the game perfectly. Bet the next Zelda wont have voice actors either.

I think people regard it as a port as it was never initially planned for the wii and its control system. Something like 2 years into development they started making it for the wii aswell. So it was never really aimed at utilising the wii from the outset hence not using it to full potential.

Yes, but...

...that doesn't give such an impression :p The way I read it Chronictank thinks this game was released to GameCube long before it was released on Wii - Twilight Princess is just as original on GameCube as it is on Wii.

my bad made the assumption as its available cheaper than on the wii and the controls seem mapped from the GC
My comment still stands tho, its VERY obvious to be a port when you play it

also remembered the name of the game i forgot, its called " No More Heroes"

I wouldn't use a word "port" in this case really as it has negative sound in it and Wii version isn't worse than GameCube version. Better wording could be "its the same game with different controls" but hey, it was meant to be the same game with different controls (we knew this long before the release) so I dont see reason for complaiments. Combat system and controls were "Zelda-like" and didn't require more use of Wii-mote, imo. [edit:] Controls mapped from the GC? How can you even compare those two? Oo[/edit]

Zelda rocked the controls had enough in there to make fighting fun, yet it was not difficult to get the hang of like Red Steel. Alot of kids play Zelda and this would have been a put off for them.

Voices blah never want to hear Link with a voice it would be wrong. Game fits in well with the controls, typical though you get something you havent experienced before on a console and then its a down side when an overhead two handed swing isnt registered :p Im suprised you arent asking for some roll bar technology so that Link only rolls after you roll :p

Give them a chance for a first attempt the games that have been designed properly for the controls work well enough. I am sure Nintendo have plenty more to offer when it comes to further games and control systems.

I am calling a spade a spade, they made no secret it was intended originally for the GC
The official release date was December 11th or something, long before the wii's debut.
It was moved so they could quickly release it for the wii.
It is a port... you can candy coat it and put sprinkles on top but at the end of the day it is what it is. Not negative, or posotive just a statement of fact.

Better wording could be "its the same game with different controls" but hey, it was meant to be the same game with different controls (we knew this long before the release) so I dont see reason for complaiments.
So we knew it was going to be a lazy attempt, so it shouldnt be critisized?

Combat system and controls were "Zelda-like" and didn't require more use of Wii-mote, imo.
They could have been done a hell of alot better and still be "zelda-like", and actually use the extra hardware i have bought. If i wanted a straight port i would have bought a cheaper Game Cube
2 examples of how they could have improved it alone would be a thrust could be a forward motion on the remote, and a overhead swing (as mentioned in the post after yours) could be a downward chop (read this carefully) like in mortal kombat armageddon and red steel.
If you dont regard that as zelda-esque fair enough, but the least they could have done was animated the difference in motions? example of this is that regardless how you swing the remote Link always does the same attack from the same side

[edit:] Controls mapped from the GC? How can you even compare those two? Oo[/edit]
You are completely wrong, it is essentially a mirror image of the GC.
The only differences at a glace (i didnt want to ruin the story for myself so just had a quick play), that:
- you can only map 2 items to the joypad compared to the 3 on the wii.
- you do all the aiming manually using the L-trigger and the analogue stick
-Camera is controlled using the c-stick
-Midna is on the z-trigger instead of the joypad
The rest is pretty much the same

As i said before as people have a real hard time reading, it isn't a bad game, it is quite a good one.
It just is a lazy attempt because little effort has been made to improve what was already there.

Try taking a objective look isntead of taking it as some sort of personal attack because i have said the holy shrine known as zelda isnt perfect

lol mirrored by other reviews

Gamespot
The Good: Compelling characters and story; outstanding world and puzzle design; longer than most action adventure games; terrific graphics, from an artistic perspective.
The Bad: Wii-specific elements feel tacked on; graphics and sound sometimes go from nostalgic to dated.

Gamespy
Pros
Play the game and be glad you did. game.

Cons
It's essentially a port of a GameCube

Eurogamer about remote (sorry no quick good and bad bit on this site, but it hink it sums up my complaint well)
At first glance... No. In fact, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess seems a little disappointing on that front, at least initially. The game was designed for the GameCube - and will be launched on that platform a week after the Wii version emerges - and it shows, not only graphically, but also in terms of the gameplay. The Wiimote is used, essentially, as a targeting pointer - you fire arrows, pellets from your slingshot and so on with it, or use it to spin the view around in free look mode. In combat, you swing your sword by slashing with the Wiimote, and perform a spin attack by shaking the nunchuck - it feels good, but it's quickly apparent that you're not actually controlling the sword; instead, the slashing movement is interpreted as a button press, and Link swings his sword just how he would if you'd pressed a button, regardless of how you held or moved the Wiimote.

In effect, then, the Wiimote isn't used for anything that you couldn't do with a control pad - but it's arguable that that doesn't actually detract from the game in the long run. The simple fact is that pointing at the thing you want to grapple is more fun than moving around a cursor with an analogue stick, and thrusting forward the nunchuck to bash an enemy with your shield is more fun than pressing a button. The final effect is the same, of course, and some have argued that it makes combat more imprecise, but in a game where precision combat is hardly the order of the day in the first place, that's not going to be a concern for the majority of players - who will instead find that replacing button presses with gestures is at best, something of a plus point, and at worst, merely no better than the old system.

I did find one one VGN but it was very obviously written by a zelda fan as they didnt even try to do a balanced review
