Having this problem where quite a few games keep slowing down, anyone had something similar and if so any fixes? best way to describe it is like this

- - - - slow down is the spaces between and the - is running fine, almost like watching a movie and constantly pressing slow down to watch certain parts in slow mo.

running vista ultimate/8800gt/3.2ghz amd dual core/4gig ram atm. graphics drivers are fully upto date as is everything else.

i'm asuming its a setting somewhere in vista or the nvidia control panel for the gfx card itself... not had a problem with most other games its just a select few, namely Sacred 2, Painkiller Black Edition at the moment.

hmm it may actually be Vista doing something in the background, but I'm certainly not that clued in to the inner workings of it to be able to say :/

tried setting all your gfx card settings to a base level, eg 1024x768, no AA, no AF and playing a game for a while.

also there is a setting in nCP that says "allow our presets for game X", it may be that something in there is messing about. I always turn it off tbh.

Just tried turning everything to low settings etc still slows down, also tried uninstalling my virus scanner (half the time they cause the problems) still going slow.

Really don't know what to do now as other games run pefectly fine/crisp its just a few select games that mess up :( if only I knew what they all had in common with the problems perhaps I could find a fix for it.

That's an odd one, something I'd normally put down to disk activity though - you've already covered the most common suspect (AV software) but is there anything else running in the background? Might be worth posting a HiJackThis log to see if there's much else lurking that shouldnt be.

that is indeed somewhat strange. I'm inclined to agree with Kryt, but imo disk activity would cause sound to become choppy?

What you could try perhaps is to turn off daemon tools for a sec, but that's just a hunch. Tried reinstalling the games that do it?

Looks fairly normal, but you'd benefit from running CCleaner to get rid of those naff file links in services.

And aye, TdC, forgot about that - it's still not impossible but certainly more unlikely. Can't think what else would do it - graphical slowdown only could start pointing at issues with the graphics system itself obviously, - tried changing the drivers even if it's to an older version? Same would apply to any chipset/motherboard drivers, but personally I'm not sure of that being the problem, as the slowdown is too methodical, too consistent in timing. Glitch with the game itself perhaps? Is it patched up to date?

Aye its patched, happens with Sacred 2 aswell tho :/ exact same lag/space between the lags.

Just been playing Left 4 Dead/TF2 and Red Alert 3 flawlessly tho.

I always had trouble running the Sacred games on my computer - stuttering, slowness etc.

The whole series is an unstable piece of wank :/

in that case it may be the game itself mate/ me, I blame nVidia for just about everything, whereas the only game that crashes on my comp is FallOut 3. ergo, even though it's tempting to still blame the NV guys I'm thinking the problem lies more with the game :/

I get the same thing in Sacred 2, it's just very badly coded imo, and for the record I've got an ATi card so its not an nVidia thing.

I'm sure its something with vista because Painkiller used to run fine on windows XP with SP3. I just can't find what it is :<

It might be indexing your drives? Thats pretty vista specific, it shouldn't do it under games but it might not recognize Painkiller as a game.
