I had that happenning. On my mobile. Freaked me out, especially since when K started answering the phone they began ringing his mobile instead. Turns out its this fat obnoxious gay prick that is friends with my housemate. Poor baby gets jealous when other people don't weigh 18 stone and don't look like an elephants intestine sellotaped together.

You may have guessed that I'm still a tad pissed off.

Anyway, if its to your mobile, apparently the only way to get the number barred is to report it to the police as well as the phone company. If its to a landline I think you can just go through BT. You need to write a log, detailing when they phone up though.

30 times a night that little turd was ringing me. Only fessed up when he heard I had the police involved.

I understand Daf. I am still trying desperately to suppress an urge to kill.

Basically you have 3 options:

1) Change of number Free of Charge (if it's to be the first CoN in 12 months) and made Ex-Directory and number withheld.

2) Choose to Refuse.

Basically a network service where you can selectively bar callers from ringing you again. You can do this by entering the persons number directly into the service, or by ringing a code after they call (them witholding their number has no effect on this as it does not work via the 1471 information, it works at a lower level than that).

3) Trace facility.

Get this through the Nuisance Calls Bureau on 0800 661 441. Basically what happens is BT put a trace on your line, and you trace the calls as and when they come in. Then when enough are traced to a specific number(s), then you make a statement to the police who send that to BT. We then write a letter of info to the Police showing them the callers details, and they go investigate it and interview the caller. If necessary it may be taken as far as court proceedings, although this is rare. Maximum penalty is 5 years in prison, £5000 fine, or both. You may never know the callers details btw, cos once the police have them the ball is in their court. You are not legally entitled to that information as it is protected by the Data Protection Act. The police may inform you of the suspect in the course of their investigations, it really is up to them.

As far as I can remember, you are not entitled to anyone else's details under the DPA, only your own (which can be charged for by the company providing it, at a reasonable rate).

I don't think you can get other peoples details, even if they are giving you hassle.

Anyway, how old are you Daf? It does make a difference, cos if you are are under 20 then teeny girls in all their retarded form ring up people they fancy and then hang up on them. I had loads of mates that did that. Oh, the shame... If you are older than that it is most likely someone you've pissed off. Either way, trace it and put the fear of god up the little bastards. In my opinion, if they are immature enough to make prank calls then they are immature enough to have the fear of god put in them by a visit from the fuzz. Which is good enough revenge for me.

(Sadly I called off the police because my friends like this haemmorhoid of gayness, so I feel strangely unresolved.)

You're not entitled to anyone elses information under the DPA. As KF said, what you would pay £10 for is access to see what information is held about you personally.

Could you imagine the consequences if you could find out that sort of info about anyone just by paying a tenner?

the other day i had in my shop some oldish bloke looking at our bikes.he was here for about an hour going on and on about bikes that i dont have,so i sent him up to our other shop where we have slightly less sporty bikes.
well he got there and spent a long time annoying our staff up there asking about triumphs and bikes that we dont really have.eventually he demanded the telephone number of triumph uk so he could ring them and get more info.
so, the salesman goes into the office to look for the number,but cant find it anywhere.however theres a copy of the local friday ad on the desk and on the back is an advert for gay chat lines.so,you guessed it,he puts the number on a card and says "here you are,they'l be able to help you".
i would LOVE to have seen the look on his face ...

(Still, chances are there's a piece of paper with both your names on somewhere, could easily nab that on the DPA).

Nope. No matter how you're involved in it, you are never ever entitled to get the other persons details.

All personal information is protected from public and private scrutiny by the DPA, and the only people that are entitled to it are the Police, and that's only because it's in the course of their duty.

And if there was a scrap of paper with both names on it the non-relevant sections would be blacked out on your copy, leaving only your details.
